Zelenskyy Confirms USD 90 bn US Weapons Plan
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed plans for Ukraine to purchase USD 90 billion worth of American weapons through European funding as part of its security guarantees, while noting that the dates for a proposed trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are yet to be finalised.
- Another part of the guarantees would involve Ukraine manufacturing drones, some of which would be purchased by the US, Zelenskyy said, noting that no formal agreement has been reached. The agreement will be formalized over the next week or 10 days.
- Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and the global leaders who see Russia as a perpetual threat seem to have accepted US President Donald Trump’s Moscow-mandated terms, with talks now expected to centre on unspecified “robust security guarantees” US interlocutors have promised for Ukraine if it ends the war. They want the guarantees to be legislatively binding and conforming to Article 5 of the Nato treaty that obligates all alliance members to defend any member who is attacked, which would make Ukraine a de facto Nato member.
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron both said a ceasefire in Ukraine should be the next step, even though Trump had argued that it was not necessary before a more permanent solution is found.
- Zelensky remained conspicuously quiet on the issue.
- What we heard from the leaders suggests that their discussions behind closed doors focused on security guarantees for Ukraine and prospects for a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
Former Army Chief Gen Naravane Launches Book
- Former Army Chief Gen Manoj Naravane recently launched his book, “The Cantonment Conspiracy,” at RIIM Business School in Pune, Maharashtra.
- During his address on Sunday, he emphasised the significance of defence spending, comparing it to an “insurance premium” that prevents wars and ensures national security.
- Gen Narvane also said, “The defence of a country cannot be outsourced. It has to be done by the country itself. You can outsource the security of a campus, but not of a nation. You cannot say, ‘China, please come and guard us.’ It is the government’s primary responsibility to secure the country.”

‘Important That De-Escalation On Border Continues’: S Jaishankar
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi on Monday, August 18, 2025, in a significant diplomatic engagement ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled in Tianjin later this month.
- The meeting was an opportunity to review and strengthen India-China bilateral relations amidst ongoing efforts to stabilise the situation on the border and build trust between the two neighbours, following years of tension since the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020.Dr. Jaishankar emphasised the crucial importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the India-China border, underlining that positive momentum in bilateral ties could only be achieved if de-escalation on the border continued with mutual cooperation.
- He stressed that the differences between the two countries must not escalate into disputes, pointing towards a clear and cooperative approach as essential for moving forward.
- The External Affairs Minister also highlighted the broader context of their engagement, referring to the fight against terrorism in all its forms as a major priority for both nations. He looked forward to an exchange of views with the Chinese side on this and other issues of mutual interest.
