INS Shivaji Receives The Original ‘Vir Chakra’

  • INS Shivaji, the premier Training establishment of the Indian Navy received the original ‘Vir Chakra’ awarded to Late Vice Admiral Benoy Roy Chowdhury, AVSM, VrC (Retd.) at a solemn ceremony at Lonavala on 18 Dec 23.
  • The ‘Vir Chakra’ is an Indian wartime military bravery award presented for acts of gallantry on the battlefield, on land or in air or at sea. VAdm Chowdhury is the only technical officer of the Indian Navy, who has been decorated with this prestigious award.
  • Vice Admiral Benoy Roy Chowdhury’s gallantry is firmly rooted during the1971 Indo-Pak War wherein, he was the Engineer Officer onboard erstwhile INS Vikrant. During the course of deployment amidst the war, one of the boilers of Vikrant was rendered non-operational while the performance of the other three boilers were observed to be sub-optimal.

India, EU Discuss Avenues For Strategic Security, Defence Cooperation

  • India’s CDS General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday discussed avenues for EU-India Strategic Security and Defence Cooperation with Chair of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Security and Defence Nathalie Loiseau.
  • The two also discussed about greater collaboration in the Indo-Pacific, avenues for enhanced synergy and defence industry cooperation between India-EU, according to defence officials.
  • Meanwhile, the CDS recently visited Japan, laid a wreath at the Hiroshima Peace Park in remembrance of the victims of Hiroshima, defence officials said.
  • He also laid floral tributes at the Gandhi Statue, aimed at enhancing peace and tranquility in the region.

Israel Hits Syrian Army Positions

  • The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) reported that it attacked a military position of the Syrian army in response to missile launches made from there towards Israeli territory. The attack was carried out with artillery and IDF tanks attacked a military position of the Syrian Army.
  • Also, earlier on Sunday a number of launches were detected from Lebanese territory towards the Kiryat Shmona area in the “Finger of the Galilee,” Israel’s northernmost point.
  • Monday night, a number of missiles were identified by the IDF that crossed from Syrian territory into Israeli territory. They fell in open areas.

After Armenia Order, Philippines, Brazil, Egypt Showing Interest In Akash ADM System

  • Amid Indian efforts to expand the export of indigenous military hardware, many countries, including Philippines, Brazil and Egypt have shown interest in procuring the Akash air defence missile system.
  • The missile system has already achieved success in selling the missiles to Armenia under an order worth over USD 600 million.
  • The Akash missile is a Defence Research and Development Organization-developed system and has been in service for over a decade now with multiple advanced versions of the missile under development by the Akash Team.
  • There are also countries in the Middle East that have shown interest in the capabilities of the Akash.

US Announces Security Operation To Counter Challenges In Red Sea

  • The US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, announced a new US-led operation focusing on the “security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden” following recent attacks by Houthi forces on commercial marine traffic in the region.
  • “I am announcing the establishment of Operation Prosperity Guardian, an important new multinational security initiative under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of its Task Force 153, which focuses on security in the Red Sea,” Austin said in a statement.
  • The statement comes during the Austin visit to Israel, where he held meetings with senior Israeli officials to discuss the Israel-Hamas war, said countries “must come together to tackle the challenge posed by this non-state actor launching ballistic missiles and UAVs at merchant vessels from many nations lawfully transiting international waters.”
