Eyes on Defence Deals As Donald Trump Pads Up

  • With Donald Trump set to take over as the US President, all eyes will be on the defence relationship with India. Some high-value Indo-US deals have reached a critical point and major acquisitions are in the pipeline.
  • President-elect Donald Trump promised to swiftly fulfil the central promise of his presidential campaign and impose severe limits on immigration on his first day in office. He also pledged to “fix every single crisis” faced by America with “historic speed and strength.”
  • Trump has pledged to launch the largest deportation effort in US history, which would remove millions of immigrants. An operation of that scale, however, would likely take years and be hugely costly. He also reiterated he would pardon many of the more than 1,500 people convicted or charged in connection with the attack.

Airbus & TATA Close In On India’s First Private Helicopter Production Line

  • Airbus Helicopters is nearing the conclusion of its site selection process for the H125 helicopter production line in India, in collaboration with TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).
  • This facility will mark a significant milestone as it will be the first private-sector assembly line for civil helicopters in the country, aligning with India’s Make-in-India initiative.
  • The Airbus H125, formerly known as the Eurocopter AS350 Écureuil, is a single-engine light utility helicopter renowned for its versatility and high performance across various mission profiles.

Indian Army Trains Kyrgyzstan Armed Forces For UN Peacekeeping

  • India has recently conducted an online training program for the Kyrgyzstan Armed Forces focused on United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations.
  • This initiative took place on January 15 and 16, 2025, marking the second edition of such training organized by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK) in New Delhi.The training included interactive sessions, case studies, and scenario-based discussions designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective contributions to peacekeeping missions.India’s commitment to global peacekeeping is significant; it has contributed over 275,000 troops to UN missions since 1950, making it one of the largest contributors to these efforts.
  • Currently, approximately 5,900 Indian personnel are deployed across 12 UN missions worldwide.

Reliance Naval & Engineering Renamed

  • The name of Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd has been changed to Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd, according to a regulatory filing.
  • “The company’s name has been changed from ‘Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd’ to ‘Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd‘ w.e.f. January 2, 2025,” the filing said.
  • Earlier, Swan Energy took control of the management of Reliance Naval & Engineering after emerging as the winning bidder under an insolvency resolution process.

India, Italy Decide To Expand Counter-Terror Cooperation

  • India and Italy have vowed to enhance their cooperation in combating terrorism including by effectively countering the “misuse” of technology for terrorist activities. Extensive deliberations were held on ways to expand bilateral cooperation in dealing with terrorism at a meeting of the India-Italy Joint Working Group (JWG) on Counterterrorism and Organised Crime held in Rome on January 16 and 17, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a readout on Sunday.
  • The two sides discussed emerging domestic, regional and international terrorist threats and exchanged views on a wide range of areas of cooperation in counterterrorism and transnational organised crime, it said.
  • Recognizing the need for enhancing cooperation for effectively countering the misuse of technology for terrorist purposes, the two sides shared experiences in preventing and mitigating the menace, the readout said.
  • India and Italy also stressed the importance of an effective prosecution of those responsible for terrorist acts.
  • In the talks, the two strategic partners reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen cooperation in the multilateral fora, including in the UN, GCTF (Global Counterterrorism Forum) and FATF (Financial Action Task Force), the MEA said.
