Defence Current Affairs 22 December 2023
J-K: 4 Soldiers Die, 2 Injured After Terrorists Attack
- One more Army personnel succumbed to injuries in the terrorist attack on two military vehicles in the Thanamandi area in the Rajouri sector on Thursday, taking the death toll in the incident to four.
- Two soldiers have been injured in the terrorist attack on two military vehicles in the Rajouri sector.
- “At approximately 3:45 PM on December 21, two army vehicles carrying troops were moving to the operational site, which was fired upon by the terrorist. The fire was immediately retaliated upon by our troops,” an Army official said.
- The operation has been underway in the general area of DKG (Dera ki Gali) since the night of December 20.
Piracy Attack On Mv Ruen In Central Arabian Sea
- On the night of 14 Dec 23, a report regarding potential piracy incident onboard Malta flagged vessel, MV Ruen, was monitored on UKMTO portal. The vessel was reported to be boarded by six unknown personnel.
- In a swift response, Indian Navy’s Maritime Patrol Aircraft deployed to investigate the incident arrived overhead MV Ruen AM 15 Dec 23 and established communication with the crew.
- All 18 crew (no Indians onboard the MV) were reported to be safe in the citadel. Concurrently, in response to the incident, INS Kochi on Anti Piracy Patrol in the Gulf of Aden was also diverted immediately to render assistance.
- The Indian Navy has deployed a second frontline ship in the Gulf of Aden to augment its anti-piracy mission, following the hijacking of a Malta-flagged cargo vessel by pirates. The Navy now has stealth guided-missile destroyer INS Kochi and INS Kolkata in the region
Naval Exercise MILAN- 2024
- The 12th edition of the Multilateral Naval Exercise – 2024 (MILAN) is to be held at Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27, and likely witness the largest-ever participation by over 50 countries and nearly 20 ships from friendly nations.
- In accordance with the exercise a final Planning Conference was also held at Visakhapatnam in hybrid mode (VC + in-person) chaired by CSO (Ops), @IN_HQENC and attended by participating nations, said the Navy in an official statement.
- The Flagship event, MILAN is a biennial multilateral naval exercise, which was incepted by the Indian Navy in 1995. Originally conceived in consonance with India’s ‘Look East Policy, MILAN expanded in ensuing years with the Govt of India’s ‘Act East policy’ and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative, to include participation from other Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs).
Defence Research Budget Insufficient Parliamentary Panel
- The current allocation in the Union budget is insufficient for India’s aspirations to be a global leader, a parliamentary panel has observed, recommending that the budget should be doubled over the coming years.
- The GOI should fix a “definite benchmark” percentage of the GDP for defence budget as military expenditure by neighbouring countries and the evolving global security scenario warrant such an outlay for the country to prepare for dealing with future security challenges, a parliamentary panel said on.
- India’s defence budget in the last few years hovered around 1.8 to 1.97 percent of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
- The allocation of Rs 5.93 crore in the defence budget for 2023-24 was 13.18 per cent of total Central government expenditure and 1.97 % of the GDP.
