India-Greece To Link Defence Industries

  • Mitsotakis said the world today is facing unprecedented challenges that require immediate and efficient action and India has a critical role to play in this. “We view India as one of the main pillars of stability and security in the wider region of the Indo-Pacific,” he said.
  • India and Greece agreed to work towards co-production and co-development of defence items and decided to firm up a mobility and migration pact in near future as PM Modi and his visiting Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis held extensive talks to impart “new energy” to the bilateral ties.
  • With the formation of a Working Group in this area, we will be able to increase mutual coordination on common challenges like defence, cyber security, counter-terrorism, and maritime security. New opportunities for co-production and co-development are being created in defence manufacturing in India, which can be beneficial for both the countries.

Skydio Plans To Bring Commercial Drones To India

  • Skydio, a leading American drone manufacturer, has announced plans to introduce its commercial drone products in India, in addition to its current focus on defence-related UAVs.
  • The company recently partnered with Indian firm Aeroarc to manufacture UAVs for defence customers in the Indo-Pacific region. This move follows Skydio’s establishment of an R&D center in Bengaluru last year.
  • Currently, Skydio focuses on three main market segments: government/defence, public safety, and inspection of critical infrastructure. Carpenter highlighted the versatility of Skydio’s drones, which are used for tasks such as perimeter security at power plants, overwatch at construction sites, and inspection in industries like oil and gas and construction.

UK’s Trident Nuclear-deterrent Missile System Misfires

  • Britain’s Trident nuclear-deterrent system misfired during a test last month, sending a missile crashing into the ocean off the Florida coast near the submarine that launched it.
  • The Ministry of Defence confirmed an ‘anomaly’ had occurred during the test but said the country’s “nuclear deterrent remains safe, secure and effective.”
  • With defence secretary Grant Shapps on board the HMS Vanguard to witness the test, The Sun said the first-stage boosters on the missile – equipped with dummy warheads – had failed to ignite.
  • The nuclear deterrent system costs around 3 billion pounds ($3.79 billion) per year to operate – equivalent to roughly 6% of the UK’s overall defence budget. Parliament voted in 2016 to approve building a new class of submarines, due to enter service in the 2030s, at a cost last estimated at 31 billion pounds.
