Govt Clears Rs 31,000 Cr Defence Orders

  • The government has cleared weapons acquisitions worth over ₹31,000 crore, including the single largest order ever to the Indian private sector. Approvals have been granted by the Cabinet Committee on Security for purchase of Brahmos missiles and launchers for the navy and high-powered radars and close in weapon systems (CIWS) for the IAF.
  • The contracts are likely to be signed in the current financial year and will come as a boost to the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem. Sources said that the order for over 200 extended range Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles is valued at close to ₹20,000 crore. These missiles will be fitted onboard leading warships. The Brahmos missile is also being supplied to the Philippines.
  • The CIWS system, the urgency for which has increased in recent times given the threat of unmanned aerial systems, is valued to close to ₹6,000 crore and once signed, will be the largest single order to the Indian private sector. Larsen and Toubro has won the air force order and the systems will be manufactured indigenously.

Maldives Visit Of Chinese Survey Ship Could Trigger Indian Ocean Security Concerns

  • A Chinese research ship is set to arrive in the Maldives on Thursday, global ship-tracking data showed, just three months after a similar vessel visited the Indian Ocean and sparked New Delhi’s security concerns.
  • The visit follows January comments by a U.S. think tank that China’s navy could “leverage the insights gained from these missions” for deployment of naval forces, a claim Beijing calls part of a concocted image-smearing “China threat” narrative.
  • Xiang Yang Hong 03, owned by a research institute that reports to China’s natural resources ministry, is due to make a port call at Male, data from Marine Traffic showed, more than a month after leaving its southeastern home port of Xiamen. In 2022, Yuan Wang 5, a military vessel capable of tracking rocket and missile launches, arrived in Colombo, alarming India. The last time a Chinese research vessel docked in Sri Lanka was in October 2023, reviving India’s concerns. But in January, the island nation imposed a year-long moratorium on foreign research ships, effectively denying China a port of call.Xiang-Yang-Hong-03’s arrival follows a January visit to China by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu that upgraded ties, with Beijing offering 920 million yuan ($128 million) in “free aid”.
  • The Maldives has said the vessel would do no research in its waters, stopping only for personnel rotation and replenishment of supplies.

  • 45,000 Prachand new-generation anti-tank mines to be procured under the Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (Indian-IDDM) category, for ₹ 650 crore. These mines have seismic sensors and remote deactivation, new technological solutions to locate landmines and reduce unwanted injuries and loss of life of soldiers.
  • Conventional subsonic long-range land attack cruise missiles (LR-LACM), having a range of 1,000 km, to be procured for the Army. This missile is a derivative of the indigenously developed Nirbhay missile and would be procured for ₹ 4,000 crore under the IDDM category.
  • 900 canister launched anti-armour loiter munition systems under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, at a cost of ₹ 600 crore. These can strike targets at Beyond Visual Line Sight ranges.

  • Six Netra Mk-1A for ₹ 9,000 crore. The Netra-1 A is developed by the Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), a DRDO laboratory, using Embraer-145 platform for the Airborne Early Warning (AEW) role.
