Defence Current Affairs 23 September 2025
India and Morocco Sign MoU to Deepen Defence Cooperation
- Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and Morocco’s Defence Minister Mr. Abdeltif Loudiyi held a bilateral meeting in Rabat on September 22, 2025, where both ministers signed a MoU on defence cooperation.
- The MoU provides for a robust institutional framework to the growing partnership and paves the way for collaboration in defence industry, joint exercises, military training and capacity building.
- To give momentum to these initiatives, Raksha Mantri announced the opening of a new Defence Wing at the Embassy of India in Rabat.
- He also highlighted the maturity of India’s defence industry and its cutting-edge capabilities, including drone and counter-drone technologies, assuring the Moroccan side that Indian companies are well-positioned to meet the requirements of Morocco’s defence forces.
Tri Services Academia Technology Symposium
- The inaugural edition of the Tri Services Academia Technology Symposium (T-SATS) commenced today at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, synergising the Services-Academia R&D ecosystem for development of niche and futuristic technologies tailored for the Indian Armed Forces.
- The event witnessed participation from Directors and Heads of Departments of academic and premier R&D institutions, along with students from 62 institutes including IISc, IITs, IIITs and Private Technology Institutes.
- The CDS also inaugurated a Technology Exhibition showcasing 43 selected innovative exhibits by academia. These innovations were evaluated by Subject Matter Experts from various technology domains of the three Services for their potential military applications.
- Themed (विवेक व अनुसंधान से विजय) – Victory through Wisdom and Research, the symposium, a first of its kind, is a significant step towards fostering deeper integration between academic research capabilities and defence technology requirements.
CONS Visit To Sri Lanka
- Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, is on a four-day official visit to Sri Lanka from 22 – 25 Sep 2025.
- During the visit the CNS will call on the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and engage in bilateral discussions with the three Service Chiefs and other Senior Govt Officials.
- He would also be participating in the 12th edition of Galle Dialogue 2025 – International Maritime Conference at Colombo on the theme ‘Maritime Outlook of the Indian Ocean under Changing Dynamics’.
- The Indian Navy regularly interacts with the Sri Lanka Navy through medium of Annual Defence Dialogue, Staff Talks and other operational interactions which include SLINEX, Passage Exercises, Training and Hydrography exchanges.
- In addition, both Navies regularly participate in multilateral events such as Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, Galle Dialogue, MILAN, Goa Maritime Conclave/ Symposium, Colombo Security Conclave.
Russia will Complete Deliveries Of S-400 Missile Systems to India in 2026
- Under the USD 5.43 billion deal signed with India in 2018, Russia will complete deliveries of the S-400 Triumf (Triumph) air defence systems next year, according to a media report on Monday.
- “Russia will complete the contract to supply India with five S-400 Triumph air defence systems in 2026. Four of these systems have been delivered to date, and the fifth will be delivered next year,” a defence source was quoted as saying by the state-run TASS news agency. According to earlier media reports, the USD 5.43 billion deal (Rs 40,000 crore) was formally signed on October 5, 2018, ignoring the threat of US sanctions.
- In March 2021, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin discussed India’s planned purchase of Russia’s S-400 air missile system and warned that the purchase of S-400 could trigger CAATSA sanctions.
China’s Third Aircraft Carrier Completes First Electromagnetic Catapult Trials
- China’s navy on Monday announced that three carrier-based aircraft have for the first time successfully carried out electromagnetic catapult-assisted take-off and landing from the country’s third aircraft carrier, the Fujian.
- Fujian, which is gearing up for its official induction, is the first among the three Chinese aircraft carriers equipped with the electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), a technology so far used only by US carriers. Carrier-based aircraft J-15T, J-35 and KongJing-600 have successfully completed their inaugural electromagnetic catapult-assisted take-off and arrested landing training on the Fujian, the navy announced.
- The success showed that China’s first domestically built catapult-equipped aircraft carrier has obtained electromagnetic catapult launch and recovery capabilities, marking another breakthrough in the development of China’s aircraft carriers, the state-run Xinhua news agency said, quoting the naval announcement.
Jaishankar, US State Secy Agree to Cooperate in ‘Priority Areas’
- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio where the two covered a range of issues of concern.
- Jaishankar said the two agreed on the importance of sustained engagement in priority areas.In a post on X, he said, “Good to meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio this morning in New York. Our conversation covered a range of bilateral and international issues of current concern. Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas. We will remain in touch.”The two leaders warmly shook hands as they met on the UNGA session sidelines.
- This meeting marks their first face-to-face interaction since trade tensions escalated after US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Indian goods over India’s purchase of Russian oil.
- The meeting is part of a continuing effort to strengthen India-US ties, which had come under strain in recent months but have since shown signs of recovery.
- The United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in 2025, which marks the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80), will be held in New York from 23-29 September 2025.
