Death Of Labourers At BRO Project Sites: Govt To Bear Expenses For Transportation Of Mortal Remains     

  • The mortal remains of casual labourers of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) who die at work will be transported to their homes on government expense, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday.
  • The Defence Ministry in a statement earlier in the day said Singh has approved the extension of facility of preservation and transportation of mortal remains, available for General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) personnel of the BRO, to casually paid labourers (CPLs).
  • Singh in his post said that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “sensitive towards the welfare of all the workers”.
  • Singh has also approved an increase in funeral expenditure for the CPLs to Rs 10,000 from Rs 1,000, the ministry said in the statement.
  • This will be borne by the government in the event of a death of any CPL while on government bona fide duty at BRO projects, whose last rites are being performed at the worksite, it added.

Army, CGDA Synergy Facilitates Release Of Rs 400 Crore In Pending Dues To Jcos, Other Ranks

  • Long-pending claims worth Rs 400 crore by a significant number of junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and other ranks of the Army have been settled following a joint initiative by the force and the defence accounts department, official sources said on Sunday. Majority of the claims pertained to house rent allowances, pay fixation cases and education allowances to children of the Army personnel, they said.
  • The Army headquarters and the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA), the office that heads the defence accounts department, carried out the pan-India outreach to clear the cases of claims, the sources said.
  • To clear the pending cases, a “war room” was established in the CGDA and cases were being monitored closely, the sources said, adding the exercise has benefitted a large number of JCOs and other ranks.
  • “The issue was raised with the CGDA and the Joint CGDA (Grievances) in an unprecedented move worked expeditiously in complete synergy with the Indian Army and analysed all cases one by one through their PAOs,” said an official.
  • The synergy between the Army and CGDA resulted in the release of long-pending claims worth Rs 400 crore for JCOs and Other Ranks, the sources said.

DMM PLUS EWG On Counter Terrorism Field Training Exercise                                  

  • Indian Army Contingent consisting of 32 personnel from a Battalion affiliated to the RAJPUTANA RIFLES departed for ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting Plus Expert Working Group on Counter Terrorism Field Training Exercise 2023 scheduled to be conducted from 25th to 30th September 2023 in Russia.
  • It is a multinational joint military exercise being hosted by Russia as a co-chair of the EWG along with Myanmar. It was preceded by Tabletop Exercise of the ADMM Plus EWG on Counter Terrorism at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from 2nd to 4th August 2023.
  • Since 2017, the ADMM Plus meets annually to allow dialogue and cooperation among ASEAN and Plus countries. The inaugural ADMM Plus was convened in Ha Noi, Vietnam on 12th October 2010. This year ASEAN member states along with Plus Group will be participating in the exercise.

LAUNCH OF THIRD MCA BARGE, LSAM 9 

  • Third Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge, Yard 77 (LSAM 9) was launched by Cmde G Ravi, Warship Production Superintendent (Visakhapatnam) on 22 Sep 23 at Guttenadeevi, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh (launch site of M/s SECON).
  • With all major and auxiliary equipment/systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, this Barge is proud flag bearer of “Make in India” initiatives of Ministry of Defence.
  • Contract for construction and delivery of 08 x Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge was concluded with M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, Visakhapatnam, a MSME, in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives of the Government of India.

VISIT OF ADM R HARI KUMAR, TO USA 

  • Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff attended the 25th International Sea power Symposium (ISS) in the United States from 19 – 22 Sep 23.
  •  ISS is conducted by the US Navy at US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island and provides the opportunity to engage with the FFCs towards the shared vision of enhancing maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
  • The CNS also held bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the ISS with his counterparts from various countries including the USA, Australia, Egypt, Fiji, Israel, Italy Japan, Kenya, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Singapore & UK.
  • During the visit extensive deliberations were also held towards exploring greater IN-USN operational engagements at bilateral and multilateral exercises such as the Malabar, RIMPAC, Sea Dragon and Tiger Triumph. Regular Subject Matter Expert exchange also takes place between both the Navies to institutionalise interoperability in various fields.

Army Looking For Lighter, Versatile Made In India Artillery Guns

  • The Army is looking for lighter, more versatile guns that will be developed and manufactured in India for its requirement of mainstay towed artillery. Interactions are on with the industry to draw up qualitative parameters for the requirements that is likely to be for close to 1,200 guns in future.
  • Sources in the defence establishment said the new Towed Gun System (TGS) being looked at will be more advanced than the DRDO-developed ATGS.
  • The artillery’s focus is on pursuing modernisation through indigenisation with the goal of staying ahead of India’s adversaries, the officials said. All gun systems bought during the past five years, and those in the process of being procured, to enhance the artillery’s lethality, reach and versatility are indigenous, except the M777 ultra-light howitzers imported from the US.
