Lockheed Martin Secures Major Contract for THAAD Missile Production
The United States government has intensified efforts to strengthen its defence manufacturing capabilities amid growing global security challenges. As part of this initiative, President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet leading ammunition and defence manufacturers at the White House to discuss increasing weapons production capacity.
Recent military engagements and extensive support to allied nations have significantly impacted U.S. inventories of advanced missiles and air-defence systems. In response, the Pentagon has awarded a contract valued at up to $35 billion to Lockheed Martin for the accelerated production of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors. The agreement aims to replenish existing missile defence stocks and enhance the country’s preparedness against emerging threats.
The move follows earlier consultations between senior government officials and executives from major defence companies, highlighting Washington’s focus on expanding domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.
Hyderabad Start-up Plans Innovative Software-Defined Satellite
XDLINX Space Labs, a private space technology company based in Hyderabad, has announced plans to launch a self-financed imaging satellite in the final quarter of 2026. The mission represents a significant step forward for India’s growing private space industry.
The satellite will demonstrate the company’s software-defined architecture, allowing it to switch between multiple functions such as Earth observation, communications, and navigation. By independently funding the project, the company seeks to validate its technology in orbit and showcase confidence in its engineering capabilities.
The spacecraft is expected to be launched aboard ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), which is specifically designed for deploying small satellites into low Earth orbit. A second mission involving collaborative partners is also planned for early 2027.
Iran Invites Prime Minister Modi to Funeral of Former Supreme Leader
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The invitation was reportedly extended during a recent telephone conversation between the two leaders, which also included discussions on developments in West Asia.
Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, died during military strikes on Tehran earlier this year. Funeral ceremonies are scheduled to take place from 4 July to 9 July, culminating in his burial in Mashhad. Additional commemorative events are planned in the religious city of Qom.
Following his death, his son Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei assumed the position of Supreme Leader. His succession has attracted considerable international attention amid ongoing regional tensions and uncertainty regarding Iran’s future political direction.
ISRO Hosts BRICS Space Agency Leaders in Bengaluru
India, serving as Chair of BRICS in 2026, hosted the meeting of Heads of Space Agencies (HOSA) in Bengaluru on 23–24 June. The gathering brought together representatives from all eleven BRICS member nations to discuss opportunities for deeper collaboration in the space sector.
Key topics included sustainable space operations, expansion of the BRICS satellite constellation programme, and proposals for establishing a BRICS Space Council. The event was organised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Department of Space, and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Indian private space companies to present their innovations in launch services, satellite systems, geospatial intelligence, and other space-related technologies through support from IN-SPACe.
Indigenous Drones Demonstrate High-Altitude Capabilities in Ladakh
Indian drone technology received a major boost as Gurugram-based DroneVerse successfully demonstrated its Rudra-7 First-Person View (FPV) drones and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) to the Indian Army in Leh, Ladakh.
The trials were conducted at altitudes reaching 18,000 feet, where extreme weather conditions and thin atmospheric pressure pose significant operational challenges. Despite these obstacles, the Rudra-7 showcased impressive performance, including stable flight operations, precision targeting simulations, rapid vertical ascents, and real-time transmission of operational data.
The successful demonstration highlights the growing capability of India’s indigenous drone industry and its potential contribution to enhancing military preparedness in high-altitude frontier regions.
