Defence Current Affairs 26 May 2024
One-month Extension In Service of General Manoj Pande
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet, on May 26, 2024, approved the extension in service of COAS General Manoj C Pande for a period of one month, beyond his normal age of superannuation (May 31, 2024), i.e. up to June 30, 2024, under Rule 16 A (4) of the Army Rules 1954.
- He was appointed as the COAS on April 30, 2022. He was commissioned in December 1982 in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers). He held the appointment of Vice Chief of the Army Staff before taking over as the COAS.
- The date is significant as well because it is the day the two senior-most generals believed to be in the running for the top post also retire. Army vice chief Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, thus far widely seen as the frontrunner for the top job, is currently the senior-most officer in service after Pande followed by Southern Army commander Lieutenant General AK Singh.
- Both Dwivedi and Singh will retire on June 30. They were commissioned into the army in December 1984.
- To be sure, a top officer can be appointed service chief even if he is retiring on the same day as the outgoing chief.
- The move comes at a time when it was widely expected that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government would name the country’s next army chief before Pande’s retirement.
Hamas Rocket Attack From Gaza Sets Off Air Raid Sirens in Tel Aviv
- Hamas fired a barrage of rockets from Gaza that set off air raid sirens as far away as Tel Aviv for the first time in months on Sunday in a show of resilience more than seven months into Israel’s massive air, sea and ground offensive.
- There were no immediate reports of casualties in what appeared to be the first long-range rocket attack from Gaza since January.
- Hamas’ military wing claimed the attack. Palestinian militants have sporadically fired rockets and mortar rounds at communities along the Gaza border, and the military arm of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group later Sunday said it fired rockets at nearby communities.
- Palestinian health workers said Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 35 people and hit tents for displaced people in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, and “numerous” others were trapped in flaming debris. Gaza’s Health Ministry said women and children made up most of the dead and dozens of wounded.
- The attacks came on Sunday, two days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to end its military offensive in Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s population had sought shelter before Israel’s incursion earlier this month. Tens of thousands of people remain in the area while many others have fled.
IAF Chief Reviews Naval Academy Passing Out Parade
- Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on Saturday reviewed the Passing Out Parade at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, where 216 trainees, including 34 women cadets got commissioned into the Indian Navy.
- 10 foreign cadets from 5 countries – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Maldives and Seychelles (all Indian Ocean countries) also passed out from the Indian Naval Academy.
- “216 trainees including 34 women trainees and 10 from friendly foreign countries passed out with flying colours, marking the culmination of their ab initio training,” as per the official release said.
- The Passing out Parade (POP) of 106 Indian Naval Academy Course, 36 and 37 Naval Orientation Courses (Extended), 38 Naval Orientation Course (Regular) and 39 Naval Orientation Course (Coast Guard and Foreign) was held at Indian Naval Academy (INA).
Indian Navy Initiates Preparatory Actions In Wake of Cyclone ‘Remal’
- The Indian Navy has initiated preparatory actions, following existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), to mount a credible Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) response in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal.\Coast on the intervening night of May 26 and 27. The situation is being closely monitored at Naval Headquarters, with comprehensive preparatory actions being undertaken by the Headquarters of Eastern Naval Command.
- Cyclone Remal was named by Oman following the standard convention for naming tropical cyclones in the region. In Arabic, Remal means sand.
Taiwan Detects 21 Chinese Military Aircraft
- Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) said on Monday that it has detected 21 Chinese military aircraft, 11 Chinese naval vessels and four Chinese coast guard vessels operating near its territory from 6 am (local time) on Sunday to 6 am (local time) on Monday.
- Out of these 21 Chinese military aircraft, 10 entered Taiwan’s southwestern and southeastern air defense identification zone (ADIZ), according to Taiwan’s MND. In response to the Chinese activity, Taiwanese armed forces have monitored the situation and deployed naval vessels, and coastal missiles to monitor the situation.
- The escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait highlight the ongoing geopolitical complexities in the region, with Taiwan reaffirming its commitment to defending its sovereignty and democratic values in the face of increasing military pressure from China.
- Days after Lai Ching-te was sworn in as Taiwan’s President, China launched two-day-long military drills on Thursday, surrounding Taiwan in what it called “punishment” for so-called “separatist acts,” CNN reported.
