DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat Gets One-year Extension

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Monday granted an extension of one year to Dr Samir V. Kamat, who is the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • With approval, Dr Samir Kamat will hold charge of DRDO till May 31, 2025. Earlier, in a move that has taken forces by surprise, the Government, approved a one-month service extension to Indian Army chief Gen Manoj Pande up to June 30.
  • The development comes at a time when the government is going ahead with implementing the recommendations made by a nine-member panel to restructure the organisation to improve its functioning.
  • The panel, headed by former principal scientific advisor to the government K VijayRaghavan, was set up last year. It submitted its recommendations to overhaul DRDO in January 2024. Kamat heading an internal committee to implement the recommendations by the VijayRaghavan-led panel to make the organisation leaner and more efficient.
  • High-priority military projects taken up by DRDO have been riddled with a raft of problems including time and cost overruns, irregular closure, and have even been declared successful despite non-achievement of key objectives, the national auditor said in a report in 2022.

Indian Army Receives First Hydrogen Bus

  • Displaying a firm resolve towards finding green and sustainable transport solutions, the Indian Army has collaborated with IOCL for demonstration trials of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology. The Indian Army is known for its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.
  • MoU was signed between the Indian Army and the IOCL in presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) and Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil.
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology offers a clean and efficient alternative by converting Hydrogen gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process. The process leaves water vapour as the only by product, thus ensuring zero emission.
  • The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus has a seating capacity of 37 passengers. It promises an impressive mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg onboard tank of Hydrogen fuel.

Netanyahu Calls Israeli Strike On Rafah ‘Tragic Mistake’

  • Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday called the country’s strike on a displacement camp in Rafah a “tragic mistake.” He said that Israel is carrying out investigation into the incident.
  • In his address at the Israeli Knesset on Monday, Netanyahu said, “Despite our best effort, not to harm those not involved, unfortunately a tragic mistake happened last night. We are investigating the case.”
  • Shortly after the attack, the Israel Defence Forces announced that two senior Hamas officials had been killed after targeting a Hamas compound. The Israeli attack followed Hamas’ first rocket attack on the Israeli city of Tel Aviv in months.

7 Pakistani Soldiers, 23 Militants Killed In Separate Shootouts

  • Pakistan’s security forces were conducting several raids in the country’s volatile northwest, a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban, when shootouts ensued leaving seven soldiers and 23 militants dead, the army said Monday.
  • The first exchange of fire occurred overnight on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing six militants and two army officers who “embraced martyrdom,” according to a statement by Pakistan’s military.
  • A second shootout happened during another security operation on Monday in the district of Tank, leaving 10 militants dead, the statement said, adding that five soldiers and seven militants were also killed during a separate fire exchange in the district of Khyber.

Defence Ministry Tightens Weapons Monitoring

  • The defence ministry is tightening the monitoring of defence equipment being manufactured in India and has asked the industry to strictly follow end-user certification rules when it comes to exports, after some reports of equipment going into the “wrong hands” have come up.
  • The Indian defence sector has seen a sharp increase in production of arms and weapons for both internal use and export orders in the past few years. Weapons manufacturing is on the rise throughout the world, given the Ukraine-Russia crisis, and multiple reports have emerged of weapons landed in other regions.
  • The ministry is now looking to set up an internal portal that will monitor consumption patterns of imports being done by defence sector companies, particularly when it comes to explosives and primers.
  • Annual defence production by value zoomed to ₹1,08,684 crore in financial year 2022-23, with private companies’ share valued at ₹21,083 crore and the rest coming from public sector entities. Exports have also risen to ₹21,083 crore in financial year 2023-24, with private sector companies contributing the significant majority.
