ICGS Akshay Commissioned to Strengthen India’s Maritime Security

India has taken another major step towards strengthening its maritime security with the commissioning of ICGS Akshay, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), at Goa Shipyard Limited on 27 June 2026. The induction of this vessel is part of the Bharatiya Tatrakshak’s ongoing modernization programme aimed at enhancing coastal surveillance and maritime operations.

The name “Akshay”, which means indestructible, symbolizes strength, resilience, and the unwavering commitment of the Indian Coast Guard to safeguard India’s maritime interests. The vessel is designed to protect the country’s vast coastline while ensuring safe, secure, and pollution-free seas.

ICGS Akshay is equipped to perform multiple missions, including maritime law enforcement, coastal security, search and rescue operations, marine environmental protection, and providing assistance to ships and fishermen in distress. These capabilities will significantly improve the operational readiness of the Coast Guard.

Designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited, the vessel reflects India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Its commissioning also highlights the increasing capability of the domestic shipbuilding industry.

India Quietly Deploys Russian Nebo-UM Radar

India has strengthened its air defence network by deploying the Russian-made Nebo-UM VHF-band radar, an advanced early-warning system capable of detecting stealth aircraft, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic threats at long distances. Although no official announcement has been made regarding its procurement, the radar has reportedly been observed during Indian Air Force exercises, confirming its operational deployment.

Developed by the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Radio Engineering, under Russia’s Almaz-Antey group, the Nebo-UM is a mobile three-dimensional phased-array radar operating in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band.

Unlike conventional radars that use higher frequencies, the Nebo-UM operates with longer wavelengths that are more effective against stealth technology. This enables it to detect advanced fifth-generation fighter aircraft such as the F-35 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor, and China’s J-20 and J-35, which are otherwise difficult to identify.

The radar has an instrumented detection range of up to 600 kilometres and can identify stealth aircraft beyond 250 kilometres under favourable conditions. It can also detect cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, while tracking targets travelling at speeds up to Mach 6.4 and altitudes exceeding 80 kilometres. The system serves as a crucial component of India’s layered air defence architecture by providing early warning against aerial threats.

INS Sudarshini Reaches Baltimore During Lokayan 26 Expedition

The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland (USA) on 26 June 2026 as part of its historic transoceanic expedition, Lokayan 26.

Before reaching Baltimore, the ship sailed through the historic Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, passing beneath several iconic bridges along the American east coast.

The visit reflects India’s rich maritime heritage and reinforces the growing friendship and cooperation between the Indian Navy and the United States Navy. During its stay, INS Sudarshini will participate in maritime engagement programmes and community outreach events ahead of the Sail250 Maryland celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Earlier, the vessel participated in the Sail250 Virginia celebrations held at Norfolk between 19 and 23 June 2026, where it joined tall ships from several countries and proudly represented India in the Parade of Sail and City Crew Parade.

Having covered more than 13,000 nautical miles from Kochi to Norfolk over five months, the voyage showcases India’s long-standing seafaring traditions and promotes the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, encouraging friendship, cooperation, and mutual trust across the oceans.

INS Ikshak Visits Seychelles

The Indian Navy’s indigenously built Survey Vessel Large (SVL) INS Ikshak reached Port Victoria, Seychelles, on 26 June 2026 during its operational deployment in the South-West Indian Ocean Region.

Ancy Sojan and Sarvesh Kushare Create New National Athletics Records

Indian athletics witnessed a historic day at the National Inter-State Championships held in Bhubaneswar, as two athletes created new national records.

Kerala’s Ancy Sojan produced an outstanding performance in the women’s long jump by recording a leap of 6.88 metres, surpassing the previous national record of 6.83 metres set by legendary athlete Anju Bobby George during the 2004 Athens Olympics. The achievement ended a 22-year-old record and made Ancy the leading Asian long jumper of the current season.

Her jump also comfortably exceeded the Asian Games qualifying standard of 6.48 metres set by the Athletics Federation of India. Uttar Pradesh’s Shaili Singh secured second place with 6.67 metres, while Mubassina Mohammed from Lakshadweep finished third with 6.53 metres. All three athletes crossed the qualification mark, although only two can represent India at the upcoming Asian Games.

In the men’s high jump, Sarvesh Kushare from Maharashtra established a new national record by clearing 2.31 metres, surpassing the previous record of 2.29 metres held by Tejaswin Shankar since 2018.

Kushare became the first Indian high jumper to clear 2.30 metres and also improved upon the Asian Games qualifying mark of 2.19 metres. His remarkable performance placed him among the top-ranked high jumpers in Asia and elevated him to joint third in the global seasonal rankings. Although he attempted 2.35 metres, he was unable to clear the height.

These achievements underline the steady rise of Indian athletics and reflect the growing standards of the country’s track and field athletes on the international stage.
