Two Indian Peacekeepers to Receive United Nations Honours
India’s contribution to global peacekeeping efforts received international recognition as two Indian peacekeepers were selected for prestigious posthumous honours by the United Nations. Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh and Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan will be awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal during a ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 5 June 2026.
Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh served under the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), while Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan was deployed with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Their service reflected India’s long-standing commitment to international peace and humanitarian operations.
On the same occasion, Major Abhilasha Barak will receive the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year award for her contribution while serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Her achievement highlights the growing role of Indian women officers in international military operations.
United Nations peacekeeping operations began in 1948, and India has remained one of the largest troop contributors since then. More than 4,200 Indian personnel are currently engaged in peacekeeping duties worldwide. India has also recorded the highest number of fatalities among troop-contributing nations, reflecting the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in global conflict zones.
The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed annually on 29 May to honour the dedication and service of peacekeepers around the world.
Sikkim Police Awarded President’s Police Colour
Sikkim Police achieved a historic milestone after receiving the President’s Police Colour, also known as Nishaan, the highest ceremonial honour granted to a police force in India. President Droupadi Murmu presented the honour at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok on 28 May 2026.
The award recognises exceptional service, discipline, professionalism, bravery, and dedication to national security and public welfare. With this achievement, Sikkim Police became the 15th state police force in India and the third police force in Northeast India to receive the distinction after Assam Police and Tripura Police.
Established in 1897, the Sikkim Police has played a crucial role in maintaining law and order in the strategically important Himalayan border state. Its responsibilities include crime prevention, emergency response, community policing, and anti-drug operations.
The Ministry of Home Affairs officially approved the honour on 16 January 2026, acknowledging the force’s consistent performance and commitment to public service.
Suryakiran Aerobatic Team Completes 30 Years
The Indian Air Force’s renowned Suryakiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) celebrated its 30th anniversary at Air Force Station Bidar on 26 May 2026. The event marked three decades of exceptional aerial performances and precision flying displays that have inspired millions across India and abroad.
As part of the celebrations, the team performed the emotional “Hollow Diamond” formation in tribute to members who lost their lives while serving in the aerobatic squadron. The formation symbolised courage, unity, and the enduring spirit of the team.
Since its establishment in 1996, the Suryakiran team has conducted over 800 air displays. Flying the Hawk Mk-132 aircraft painted in the iconic red-and-white colour scheme, the team continues to represent the professionalism and excellence of the Indian Air Force.
The squadron’s motto, “Sadaiva Sarvottam” meaning “Always the Best,” reflects its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of aviation skill and discipline.
Passing Out Parade Conducted at Indian Naval Academy
The Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, organised its Spring Term 2026 Passing Out Parade on 28 May 2026, marking the successful completion of military training for hundreds of cadets.
A total of 311 trainees, including 66 women cadets, graduated during the ceremony. The batch also included six trainees from friendly foreign nations — Seychelles, Tanzania, and Vietnam — demonstrating India’s expanding defence cooperation and military training partnerships with other countries.
Among the foreign trainees were two women cadets from Seychelles, reflecting increasing participation of women in defence institutions globally. The event highlighted the Academy’s growing international presence and India’s role in strengthening defence diplomacy.
India and Singapore Hold 16th Defence Policy Dialogue
India and Singapore further strengthened their strategic defence partnership during the 16th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue held in Singapore on 28 May 2026.
The meeting was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Singapore’s Permanent Secretary (Defence), Joseph Leong. Both sides reviewed ongoing military engagements and discussed future cooperation in areas such as defence industry collaboration, cybersecurity, maritime security, artificial intelligence, and advanced defence technologies.
The discussions also focused on emerging security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and the importance of innovation-driven defence partnerships. India and Singapore reaffirmed their support for an open, inclusive, and rule-based regional security architecture.
Both countries appreciated their cooperation in regional organisations such as ASEAN-led forums and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). The dialogue underlined the importance of continued high-level engagement and institutional collaboration between the two nations.
Indian Air Force Collaborates with IIT-Bombay
The Indian Air Force signed three agreements with IIT-Bombay on 27 May 2026 to introduce advanced predictive maintenance systems for its Su-30MKI fighter aircraft fleet.
The project aims to adopt predictive, prognostic, and prescriptive maintenance technologies using indigenous and data-driven solutions. The initiative is expected to reduce aircraft downtime, improve operational readiness, and enhance mission availability.
The agreements were formalised in the presence of Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb, Director General (Aircraft), IAF, and IIT-Bombay Director Shireesh B Kedare.
The Su-30MKI, manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), forms the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s fighter fleet, with more than 270 aircraft currently in service. These aircraft are critical for air superiority missions, strategic defence operations, and long-range strike capabilities.
The new maintenance initiative will also support the “Super Sukhoi” modernisation programme, which seeks to upgrade avionics, sensors, and weapon systems to ensure the aircraft remains operationally effective until the 2050s.
India’s focus on indigenous innovation and collaboration with academic institutions reflects the country’s growing emphasis on self-reliance in defence technology and aerospace development.
