MoD & NSE ink MoU to Facilitate Capital Market

  • Ministry of Defence and National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE), on July 29, 2024, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate capital market access to the MSMEs.
  • The MoU will be in force for a period of five years, during which, DDP and NSE would conduct an extensive awareness drive through seminars, MSME camps, knowledge sessions, road shows & workshops to guide corporates engaged with the Ministry of Defence for fund raising on NSE Emerge platform.
  • NSE will also assist MSMEs in connecting with intermediaries like merchant bankers, registrar, transfer agent, depositories etc and guide them regarding the capital markets, capital raising mechanism and regulatory compliance and requirement.

DAC Clears Capital Acquisition Proposals

  • A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, took place on July 29, 2024, in which various capital acquisition proposals were considered.
  • Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) was accorded to the procurement of Advanced Land Navigation System (ALNS) for Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) of the Indian Army. The system is spoof-proof with high levels of encryption.
  • The ALNS Mk-II is compatible with Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, NAVigation using Indian Constellation (IRNSS, NavlC), India in addition to Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS).
  • The ALNS Mk-II offers compatibility with Defence Series Maps resulting in very high accuracy in navigational applications for AFVs. This equipment will be procured from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Chennai under Buy [lndian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (lDDM)] category.
  • In order to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard, the DAC accorded AoN for procurement of 22 Interceptor Boats with latest state-of-art system capable of quick interception and shallow water operation in territorial waters.

US To Provide Consultancy To India To Build Advanced UAVs

  • As part of the USD 3.1 billion 31 MQ-9B Predator drone deal between India and the US, American side is proposing to provide consultancy to Indian entities for developing an indigenous advanced unmanned aerial vehicle.
  • India and the US have been holding discussions for the drone deal for the last few years, under which the three services will get the 31 drones, with the Navy getting 15 birds and the Air Force and Army and Air Force getting eight each.
  • Sources said that the consultancy is expected to cut down the time taken for development of a highly advanced drone by a significant margin.
  • The MQ-9B drones are planned to be deployed at four places, including INS Rajaji near Chennai and Porbandar in Gujarat, by the Indian Navy, while the other two services will keep them jointly at two bases in Sarsawa and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh at Air Force bases due to long runway requirements.

Quad Foreign Ministers Announce Plan To Expand IPMDA to Indian Ocean Region

  • In a significant move, the four-nation grouping Quad on Monday announced a plan to expand its ambitious Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) programme to the Indian Ocean region that would facilitate monitoring of the strategic waters.
  • The announcement following a Quad foreign ministerial meeting came amid concerns in New Delhi over China’s growing forays into the Indian Ocean which is largely considered as the backyard of the Indian Navy.
  • The Quad also said that it was working for early operationalisation of its South Asia programme through India’s Information Fusion Centre for the Indian Ocean Region.

Russian Navy Starts Drills Involving 20,000 Personnel, 300 Ships

  • The Russian navy started planned exercises involving most of its fleet as well as 20,000 personnel and 300 ships, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday, citing the defence ministry.
  • The drills are to test the navy’s military command bodies of three fleets as well as the Caspian Flotilla, TASS news agency reported. Russia’s Navy comprises of four fleets, the Caspian flotilla and several task forces.
  • The Northern Fleet in Russia’s Arctic, the Pacific Fleet in the Pacific Ocean, the Baltic Fleet in the Baltic Sea as well as the Caspian Flotilla in the Caspian Sea will participate in the drills, TASS reported.
  • About 300 surface ships and boats, submarines and support vessels, some 50 aircraft and more than 200 units of military and special equipment will be involved in the combat training, TASS reported.
  • Since launching an invasion on Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has conducted numerous military exercises on its own or with other countries, including China or South Africa.
