The guided-missile stealth frigate INS Trikand, the offshore patrol boat INS Sumitra, and the maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) Dornier all took part in the 13th iteration of the bilateral exercise “Naseem Al Bahr” between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) (Sea Breeze).
The exercise, which comprised three phases—a harbor phase, a sea phase, and a debriefing—was performed off the coast of Oman from November 19 to 24, 2022. Professional exchanges between the IN and RNO operations personnel as well as friendly sporting competitions between the two fleets were activities carried out during the harbor period. Along with RNO Ships Al Shinas and Al Seeb, IN Ships Trikand and Sumitra departed for the sea phase. RAFO fighter aircraft Hawks with a shore-based base at IN-MPA Dornier, RNO MPA.
A tactical maritime exercise featuring surface action, air defence, maritime surveillance, and interdiction/VBSS was included in the sea phase. These operations improved mutual understanding of each other’s processes and strengthened interoperability. On November 23, 2022, the exercise’s debriefing phase was held at the RNO Naval Base in Duqm.
Significance of Ex- Naseem-Al-Bahr
With shared cultural values, India and Oman have always had cordial and friendly ties. These bilateral ties now have more heft and substance thanks to naval exercises. In 1993, the first IN-RNO drill took place. The 30-year anniversary of IN-RNO bilateral drills is this year.
Frontline frigate INS Trikand is outfitted with a broad selection of weaponry and sensors. The ship is a part of the Mumbai-based Indian Navy’s Western Fleet. A multipurpose offshore patrol boat named INS Sumitra is a part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet, which is located in Visakhapatnam.
