About Group Captain Shaliza Dhami

Group Captain Shaliza Dhami, the first woman to command an Indian Air Force (IAF) missile squadron in Punjab’s border areas, has a distinguished military career. Dhami, who was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, has a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Communication. Dhami’s IAF career began in 2003 when she was appointed as a flying officer on a short-service commission. Her first solo flight was in a HAL HPT-32 Deepak in 2003. On December 20, 2005, she was promoted to flight lieutenant, and on December 20, 2009, she was promoted to squadron leader.

Dhami was promoted to wing commander in December 2016, and she was appointed as India’s first female flight commander in August 2019. She is a flight commander for a Chetak helicopter unit at Hindan Air Force Station. Dhami also made history by becoming the IAF’s first female flying instructor for Chetak and Cheetah helicopters. This makes her the IAF’s first female flying instructor.

Dhami made history again on December 18, 2018, when she was appointed as the Indian Air Force’s first female officer with a permanent commission.

Dhami’s career in the IAF demonstrates her dedication and hard work. Her accomplishments in the IAF not only broke down barriers but also served as a model for other women to follow.
