IAF to Procure Bombardier Global 6000 Jets for ISTAR Platforms

Three Bombardier Global 6000 private planes will be converted into advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) systems, bolstering India’s aerial surveillance capabilities.

These aircraft will be outfitted with cutting-edge sensor packages developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to improve the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) reconnaissance capabilities.

The Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) laboratory at DRDO will be critical in creating the sensors for these ISTAR platforms. A Multispectral (EO-IR) Long-Range Oblique Photography (LOROP) sensor, a geospatial intelligence processing and exploitation suite, high data-rate line-of-sight (LOS) and Satcom data-links, an onboard mission communications suite, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities for image intelligence, automatic target recognition, change detection, and a Common Operational Picture (COP) will be included in the sensor package.

Initially, India intended to buy these planes directly from US defence firm Raytheon, which would also supply the technology for the ISTAR programme. However, it now looks like the DRDO’s CABS will be in charge of the domestic development of these advanced monitoring capabilities. The primary objective of the ISTAR platform is to intercept enemy signals and transmit important intelligence to ground commanders, allowing them to make informed counterstrike decisions. It provides precise targeting data, assisting ground forces in determining the best weapons and their precise placement.

All reconnaissance platforms, including satellites, other aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, and ground reconnaissance vehicles, will maintain a two-way communication link with the ISTAR-equipped aircraft. This seamless coordination guarantees that real-time intelligence is distributed to all relevant assets, improving situational awareness and response capabilities.
