After the Former Chief of the Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha advocated for the procurement of 6-8 units of strategic bombers for long-range bombing capacities, various speculations were made that the Indian Air Force might look for various bombers like Russian Tu-22, American B-1 or the Tu-160. However, the Indian Air Force has denied all the rumours and refuted that Air Force has not any plans for inducting any bombers for now.
No Strategic Bombers for India
Indian Air Force also clarified that the Sukhoi-34, which is an optimized variant of the Su-27 doesn’t fit into the role of a strategic bomber and India has eliminated the option. but the IAF has transitioned into multi-role fighters which can perform various roles in a single mission.

Various reports suggested that India’s interest in Strategic Bombers has been refuted, And the Indian Air Force is not planning for any acquisitions right now. IAF has been planning for recent developments and the acquisition of multi-role fighters such as Rafale and Typhoon, as such aircraft are very reliable in performing and providing versatility and the ability to perform a wide range of missions. Multiple roles like air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance and electronic are the specialization of these aircraft.
The IAF’s strategy is in line with its changing operational requirements and the necessity for versatile assets capable of adapting to varied combat circumstances. The IAF can successfully respond to varied threats and carry out complicated missions by investing in multi-role fighters, allowing for a high level of operational flexibility.
While discussions about strategic bombers have taken place, the current focus and trend of the IAF’s modernization activities revolve around improving its fleet of multi-role aircraft. India is dedicated to equipping its air force with cutting-edge technologies and platforms that maximise operational efficiency and combat effectiveness as it strengthens its defensive capabilities.
