The Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) was recently accepted by the Defence Acquisition Council, overseen by the Union defence minister.
75 ATAGS Guns Per Year
Bharat Forge, based in Pune, has also indicated that the contract could be finalised later this year, subject to the opening and review of commercial bids to decide the manufacturer for 60% of the guns, with the remaining 40% going to another manufacturer. The ATAGS was created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and is manufactured by Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems, both private-sector businesses. Following the conclusion of the contract, the Indian Army will acquire 75 guns per year, resulting in the construction of four ATAGS gun regiments per year.
Both firms aim to produce a minimum of 1,500 additional ATAGS rifles over the course of several years. Bharat Forge has stated that it is willing to produce one gun per day if bulk orders for the remaining guns are secured. The acquisition of ATAGS is an important step towards improving the Indian Army’s artillery capability. The deployment of these sophisticated artillery systems will help to strengthen the country’s defensive capabilities and provide a more strong artillery force.
