Indian Army to Get Jetpack Suits to Counter China and Pakistan Soon

The Indian Army may soon deploy soldiers equipped with jet packs to defend its borders with China and Pakistan. Soldiers in “Iron Man” suits could soon be deployed in semi-urban and urban warfare scenarios. Speaking to the journal, an army officer in Jammu and Kashmir, who decided to remain nameless, claimed the jet pack suits are arriving as an airborne surveillance platform.

The officer pointed out that the usefulness of these garments would vary depending on where they were used. “For example, it will be less effective in densely forested terrain.” “Wind must also be considered in higher mountain reaches.” Another officer stated that jet-packing would include more than just flying through the air. Other technology, such as infrared goggles, could identify enemy troops in dense forests.

Gravity Industries: The Manufacturer

Gravity Industries, a British business created by ex-Marine Richard Browning, demonstrated jet pack outfits to the Army Borne Training School (AATS) in Agra in February of this year. The Indian Aerospace Defence News (IADN) published a video of Browning demonstrating the jet pack system to the Indian Army on Twitter. According to Gravity Industries, the jet pack suit is powered by five gas turbines capable of producing over 1,000 horsepower and 144 kg of thrust. The case frequently travels at speeds in excess of 60 kilometers per hour (km/ph). Jet A1 Kerosene or Premium Diesel can power the jet pack.

In January, the Indian Defence Ministry announced its intention to purchase 48 jet pack suits under emergency procurement via Fast Track Procedure (FTP) under Buy (Indian) category and invited prospective bidders to participate in the procurement process subject to conditions.

The Government of India invites responses to this request only from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) or Authorised Vendors or Government Sponsored Export Agencies (applicable in countries where domestic laws do not permit direct export by OEM), subject to the condition that in cases where the same equipment is offered by more than one of the aforementioned parties, preference would be given to the OEM.
