The Indian Army, which presently deploys four regiments of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, plans to acquire two more regiments with an 800km range. This action demonstrates the Army’s commitment to improving its offensive capabilities and operational reach. The deployment of the third and fourth BrahMos regiments in 2016, equipped with the Block III variant of the missile, boosted India’s military capabilities near the China border in the northeast.

The BrahMos missile’s Block III model will be including trajectory manoeuvring and steep-dive capabilities designed primarily for mountain warfare scenarios. Following India’s admission to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in 2016, the software limits were abolished, resulting in a range increase from 290km to 450km.

The improved form of the BrahMos missile is estimated to have an 800km range, giving the Indian Army additional operational flexibility and strike capabilities. Furthermore, mainstream media sources indicate that the missile’s speed may be increased, potentially reaching speeds above Mach 4. The 800km variant of the BrahMos missile has apparently been tested and is currently being refined before going into production.

Each regiment consists of about 100 missiles, five mobile autonomous launchers mounted on heavy-duty 1212 trucks, a mobile command centre, and other hardware and software components. These regiments are an important aspect of the Indian Army’s offensive capabilities, allowing for quick and precise targeting of enemy positions.
