The Indian Navy commissioned the fifth Kalvari class submarine Vagir on January 23, 2023, with Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, as the Chief Guest. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai is building these submarines in collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France. Four Kalvari class submarines have already been delivered to the Indian Navy.
Glorious Past and Inception
The erstwhile Vagir was commissioned on November 1, 1973, and performed a variety of operational missions, including deterrent patrols. After nearly three decades of service, the submarine was decommissioned on January 7, 2001.
The submarine was renamed ‘Vagir’ and launched on November 12, 20. It has the distinction of having the shortest build time among all indigenously manufactured submarines to date. She made her first sea sortie on February 22, signaling the start of sea trials, and she has gone through a series of comprehensive acceptance checks as well as stringent and demanding sea trials before being commissioned.
Vagir – Ferocious Fifth
Vagir will help the Indian Navy advance its maritime interests by performing a variety of missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and surveillance.
Vagir – Sand Shark
The Sand Shark symbolizes ‘Stealth and Fearlessness,’ two qualities that are synonymous with the submariner’s ethos.
The induction of Vagir is another step forward for the Indian Navy, cementing its position as a builder’s Navy while also demonstrating MDL’s capabilities as a premier ship and submarine building yard.
