Orders from the Ministry of Defence included a plethora of firepower for the Indian Navy, ranging from offshore patrol vessels to missile vessels and BrahMos missiles. The contracts, which are part of defence deals worth Rs 37,600 crore with local manufacturers, are also expected to boost Make in India.
At the same time, the Indian defence ministry is close to finalising a $300 million deal to outfit Indian Navy helicopters with American weapons.
Imported Choppers with Advanced Weaponry
The Hellfire missiles and Mark 54 anti-submarine torpedoes will augment the strike capability of 24 MH-60 Romeo helicopters leased from the United States in 2020.
The $2 billion helicopters will be able to carry out operations once they are outfitted with advanced weaponry. The deal is reportedly nearing completion as the Ministry of Defence negotiates its completion under Foreign Military Sales. Aside from the Mark 54 torpedoes used by US surface ships and helicopters, the Indian Navy will also receive Hellfire missiles, which have killed Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.
What Will the Navy Receive?
The Indian government secured 24 Lockheed Martin MH-60 Romeo helicopters in a Rs 16,000-crore deal with US counterparts two years ago via a fast-track procedure. These choppers, which are set to replace Sea King helicopters, can operate from aircraft carriers, cruisers, and other vessels.
