About BrahMos

The development of the BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile is a shining example of leveraging R&D organizations’ core strengths and India’s industrial capabilities. BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture (JV) between India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Joint Stock Company “Military Industrial Consortium” “NPO Mashinostroyenia” (NPOM).

The BRAHMOS is the first and only supersonic cruise missile in the world. It is a precision strike weapon for the Army, Navy, and Air Force that can be mounted on ships, mobile launchers, submarines, and aircraft to attack land and sea targets. BRAHMOS has three times the velocity, 2.5 to 3 times the flight range, 3 to 4 times the target detection range, and more than nine times the kinetic energy of existing state-of-the-art subsonic cruise missiles.

Significance of BrahMos

BRAHMOS is a two-stage missile with a conventional warhead weighing 200 to 300 kg and a solid propellant booster as its first stage and a liquid ramjet as its second stage. This one-of-a-kind configuration allows the system to fly at speeds of Mach 3 or higher.

The missile has a flight range of up to 290 kilometers with supersonic speed throughout the flight, resulting in a shorter flight time, ensuring lower dispersion of targets, quicker engagement and low reaction time for target, and no effect of any known countermeasure system. It follows the ‘Fire and Forget Principle,’ taking a variety of paths. The system’s unique special features include stealth technology and a Guidance System with advanced embedded software. The missile can perform multiple roles/missions with pinpoint accuracy at any time of day or night and in any weather condition.

Is BrahMos enough for India

The deployment of the BRAHMOS cruise missile system in the services has provided the Indian Armed Forces with the much-needed capability and punch to conduct deep surgical strikes on both land and sea, allowing them to defeat dynamic and diverse threats across the country’s international borders.

BRAHMOS has established its supersonic strength worldwide since its historic maiden launch on June 12, 2001. The JV has successfully established an ecosystem of defense industries across the country, with various small, medium, and large enterprises producing various critical systems and subsystems for BrahMos. The unique BrahMos Industry consortium has brought together a number of competent defense firms and laboratories from both partnering countries to develop and produce various subsystems and system missiles, resulting in a unique product.

BRAHMOS has emerged as a potential weapon of choice, with several countries from different continents expressing strong interest in the versatile weapon. It has entered the international market with the most powerful precision strike weapon system and a Force Multiplier in today’s Network Centric Warfare (NCW) environment. BrahMos Aerospace signed a historic multi-million dollar export contract with the Philippines in January 2022 for the delivery of the BRAHMOS Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile system to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. BrahMos Aerospace, as a champion of ‘Make in India,’ is now going global.

As India commemorates 75 years of independence with ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ the successful journey of India’s state-of-the-art and cutting-edge military technology BRAHMOS missile has carved a niche for itself in the Indian defense industry and as a role-model on the global stage. BrahMos has remained and will remain India’s most prestigious and successful defense and aerospace enterprise in the years ahead.
