Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff, stated that the indigenously built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, will be headquartered in Visakhapatnam, under the Eastern Naval Command, and will be completely operational by November 2023.
INS Vikrant to be Fully Operational by November 2023
Speaking to reporters in Vizag on Wednesday, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said that the commissioning of the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was a watershed moment for India and that all efforts are being made to have it fully operational by November 2023. The Indian Navy MiG-29K fighter jet recently landed on the INS Vikrant for the first time at night, marking a crucial step towards the battleship becoming fully operational with its air wing by the end of the year, he added.
INS Vikrant is now sailing in the Arabian Sea and was commissioned into the Indian Navy last September, marking an important milestone in India’s desire for self-reliance in the defence manufacturing industry. To accommodate INS Vikrant, a dock would be created at Vizag’s outer port.
The Indian Navy has assured the government that the naval force will be Atmanirbhar (self-sufficient) by 2047. He added that the Navy seeks to have a made-in-India security solution for the country and that the Navy has been supporting and providing incentives to start-ups and MSMEs for self-reliance.
