The chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has revealed that each of its Su-30MKI squadrons now carries Su-30MKI jets armed with the air-launched BrahMos-A supersonic cruise missile. The IAF has initially deployed at least one BrahMos-A capable fighter per squadron in its inventory of 12 Su-30MKI squadrons. This number is projected to rise to two in the near future, with plans to eventually have four such capable jets per squadron.

12 Su-30MKIs Squadrons Equipped with BrahMos

The Su-30MKI’s fuselage is strengthened to accommodate the 2.5-ton Mach 3 capable BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile. The IAF initially planned to convert 40 Su-30MKIs, but this number is projected to climb to 60-70 in the following years. When launched from fighter jets, the air-launched BrahMos-A missile system is extremely lethal. Furthermore, the IAF is looking forward to the introduction of lighter and smaller BrahMos-NG Air Launched Supersonic Cruise missiles. These missiles, unlike the BrahMos-A, will not require any fuselage strengthening, making them compatible with any IAF fighter jets.

The BrahMos-NG missiles will strengthen the IAF’s combat capabilities by increasing flexibility and versatility in a variety of operational circumstances. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, has a reputation for speed, precision, and lethality. Its air-launched derivative considerably extends fighter aircraft’s reach and attack capability, allowing them to engage targets with astonishing precision from long distances.

The prospective introduction of BrahMos-NG missiles bodes well for the IAF. These new missiles will increase the IAF’s operational flexibility and combat effectiveness due to their reduced weight and compatibility with numerous fighter jet platforms.
