Ponung Doming has become the first female officer from Arunachal Pradesh to be promoted to the rank of colonel in the Indian army and will be heading a strategic border post. Border Road Organisation (BRO) announced that Col. Doming, who was recently promoted to the Corps of Engineers, will take command of a border road task force (BRTF) in the strategically crucial Leh region of the union territory of Ladakh. She is from Pasighat in the East Siang district. She will take leadership of a BRTF in a strategically critical sector in Leh.
About Col Ponung Doming
Col Doming attended the Daying Ering Higher Secondary School and the IGJ Government Higher Secondary School in Pasighat, where she was born to Olom Doming and Jimmi Dai Doming. In Class XII, she was the top tribal student. Doming, a civil engineering graduate of Maharashtra’s Walchand College of Engineering, was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Indian Army in 2008. She was promoted to Major four and a half years later.
She was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army in 2008 through the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. In April 2014, she participated in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force deployment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She stated that as a schoolgirl, she never imagined herself serving in the Indian Army.
Meanwhile, both Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein complimented Col. Doming on her accomplishment. Both conveyed their best wishes to her on social media and expressed hope that she will continue to demonstrate leadership while serving in the army. Col Doming of the Corps of Engineers is the first officer from North East India to be promoted to Colonel.
Doming, who is naturally down to earth, is an inspiration to many people today. When asked whether she has any advice for the younger generation, particularly for ladies who want to join the army like her, she answered, “My advice to young aspirants of our home state and the region is, to dream big and above all, have the courage to achieve or fulfil that.” “I will consider myself blessed if I can inspire even one person to do whatever small thing we can for our country,” she continued.
