Tibetan troops recruited by the Chinese Army to assist them in high-altitude areas are now visible as part of People’s Liberation Army border defence patrols along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.

China began recruiting these soldiers soon after the LAC attack in 2020 to assist them sustain in high-altitude areas as part of their long-term deployment plans there. “The Tibetan soldiers are now visible as part of their border defence troops’ patrols, but the majority remain mainland Chinese soldiers,” security forces sources stated.

According to sources, the Chinese have had issues with their regular mainland troops’ ability to sustain themselves in high-altitude areas, and they have also seen how Indian Special Frontier Force troops, including many Tibetan troops, performed during the Indian Army’s capture of high peaks in the Kailash ranges.

China instructed its senior commanders to induct at least one soldier from each Tibetan family and turn them faithful to the country while keeping an eye on their families. According to insiders, the Chinese move has caused a lot of resentment among the impacted families. Since April-May 2020, India and China have been locked in a military standoff along their border.

India has also deployed nearly equivalent numbers of troops throughout the Eastern Ladakh region to counter any future Chinese miscalculation. The Army has also shifted its focus to the north, deploying new formations and dual-tasking some of them in preparation for a two-front threat scenario.
