NIRF Ranking 2022

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has emerged as the best educational institution while Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru is the best university in India Rankings-2022 which were released by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi.
  • According to the rankings, IIM, Ahmedabad is the best management institute in the country followed by IIM, Bangalore, and IIM, Calcutta.
  • AIIMS, New Delhi is the best medical college, and Savitha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai is the best dental college. IIT, Madras is the best engineering college followed by IIT, Delhi, and IIT, Bombay. Miranda House, Delhi is the best college, followed by Hindu College, Delhi, and Presidency College, Chennai. Jamia Hamdard in the best Pharmacy institute in the country.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, 21st century will be the century of knowledge and innovation.
  • He said, innovation and entrepreneurship will be part of National Institutional Ranking Framework, NIRF, and National Assessment and Accreditation Council, NAAC. Mr Pradhan said, all institutions have to come into the two frameworks, accreditation, and ranking.

Kerala Reports First Monkeypox Case

  • The high-level multi-disciplinary team, which was rushed to Kerala after the state reported the country’s first case of Monkeypox, is holding consultations with the State Government authorities in Thiruvananthapuram. The team will assist in instituting adequate public health measures to deal with the situation.
  • Monkeypox was confirmed in a 35-year-old Kollam native who reached the state capital on Tuesday from the United Arab Emirates. Besides the patient, his close contacts including his parents and two drivers have also been isolated. As many as 11 people who sat close to the patient on the flight have been alerted.
  • Union Health Ministry today released guidelines for the management of Monkeypox disease asking international passengers to avoid close contact with sick people including those with skin lesions or genital lesions.

WHO To Reconvene Monkeypox Emergency Committee

  • World Health Organization has said it will reconvene its expert monkeypox committee on the 21st of this month to decide whether the outbreak constitutes a global health emergency.
  • A second meeting of the WHO’s emergency committee on monkeypox will be held, with the UN health agency now aware of 9,200 cases in 63 countries at the last update issued Tuesday.
  • A surge in monkeypox infections has been reported since early May outside the West and Central African countries where the disease has long been endemic.
  • On the 23rd of last month, the WHO convened an emergency committee of experts to decide if monkeypox constitutes a so-called Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest alarm that the WHO can sound.
  • But a majority advised the WHO’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that the situation, at that point, had not met that threshold.

Guidelines For Selling Medicine Over Ecommerce Sites

  • The Union Government has directed the e-commerce platforms to sell Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs only after customers upload valid medical prescriptions from the registered practitioners on the platforms.
  • The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued an advisory to e-commerce platforms on the sale of Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs.
  • Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministry said, consuming such drugs without medical supervision can lead to severe health complications.
  • In 2016, Ayush Ministry issued a public notice informing that the Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs are required to be taken under medical supervision and purchasing the same online should be avoided without medical consultation.

BRICS Labour And Employment Ministers’ Meeting

  • Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav attended the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting held under the Chinese Presidency. The Ministers of the member countries Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa participated in the meeting. The discussions were held on three priority issues, namely – promoting green jobs for sustainable development, Developing skills for resilient recovery, and Protecting Workers Right in New Forms of Employment.
  • During the session, Mr Yadav highlighted the steps taken by India to provide relief to workers during the pandemic. He also mentioned various initiatives taken towards providing free rations, enhancing the number of days of assured employment under MNREGA, and collateral-free loans provided to street vendors to help them resume their businesses under PM SVANidhi Yojana during the pandemic.
  • As regards the priority issues discussed in the meeting, Mr Yadav said, that Climate change is necessitating a shift towards more sustainable development and green jobs. He further informed that a Sector Council for Green Jobs has been set up in India to develop strategy and implement programs for Skill development in green sector.

BIMSTEC Expert Group On Cyber Security Cooperation

  • A two-day meeting of the BIMSTEC Expert Group on Cyber Security Cooperation got underway in New Delhi.
  • The meeting is based on the agreement made during the meeting of the BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs held in Bangkok in March 2019 that the BIMSTEC Expert Group will formulate an Action plan to deal with Cyber Security challenges in the BIMSTEC region.
  • The in-person meeting is being chaired by the National Cyber Security Coordinator Lieutenant General Rajesh Pant and will witness the participation of delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. All the delegates are experts in Cyber Security.
  • India, as a lead Country for Security Sector in the BIMSTEC forum, has taken the initiative to organize this meeting on Cyber Security Cooperation and develop a Plan of Action on Cyber Security.
  • The BIMSTEC Member States are being represented by the senior officials of their government organizations that deal with cyber security and incident response.

Mission Shakti Scheme

  • Women and Child Development Ministry has issued guidelines for Mission Shakti Scheme.
  • This scheme has been launched for the safety, security and empowerment of women. It seeks to realize the government’s commitment to women-led development by making them equal partners in nation-building.
  • The key objectives of the mission are to provide care, support and assistance to women and to put in place quality mechanisms for the rescue, protection and rehabilitation of women who are victims of crime and violence.
  • The scheme is also aimed at improving accessibility to various government services available for women at various levels.
  • Mission Shakti has two sub-schemes – Sambal and Samarthya. While the Sambal stresses on safety and security of women, the Samarthya focuses on the empowerment of women.
  • The components of the Sambal sub-scheme consist of schemes including One Stop Centre, Women Helpline, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Nari Adalats.
  • The components of the Samarthya sub-scheme consist of schemes of Ujjwala, Swadhar Greh and Working Women Hostel.
  • In addition, the existing schemes of the National Creche Scheme for children of working mothers and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana have now been included in Samarthya.

India Tops ISSF Shooting World Cup Medal Tally

  • In the ISSF Shooting World Cup, India topped the medal tally at Changwon in South Korea.
  • India finished the tournament with eight medals including three golds, four silvers, and one bronze, and was way ahead of hosts Korea and Serbia in the medal tally. 
  • The day began on a brilliant note for India when the troika of Arjun Babuta, Shahu Tushar Mane, and Paarth Makhija helped the country bag its third gold medal beating Korea 17-15 in the 10-meter air rifle team event.
