World Day To Combat Desertification And Drought

  • The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is a United Nations observance celebrated each year on 17 June.
  • Its purpose is to raise awareness of the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought. Each year’s global celebration has a unique, novel emphasis that had not been developed previously.
  • This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution In 1995, after the day when United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is drafted.
  • The theme of 2022 Desertification and Drought Day “Rising up from drought together”.
  • Between 1900 and 2019, droughts impacted 2.7 billion people in the world, and caused 11.7 million deaths. Currently, forecasts estimate that by 2050 droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population.
  • Spain to host Desertification and Drought Day 2022.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting Begins In New Delhi

Industrial Decarbonization Summit 2022

  • Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized on maintaining equilibrium between ecology, environment, and development.
  • Inaugurating Industrial Decarbonization Summit 2022 in New Delhi, Mr Gadkari said, in the coming days, we have to strengthen the country’s economy and at the same time save the environment.
  • He said the government’s priority is green hydrogen and by using biotechnology we can increase the productivity of Biomass. He said, by using Biomass we can make Bio-ethanol, Bio-LNG and Bio-CNG.

Digital News Report 2022: Reuters Institute

  • All India Radio, the largest radio network in the world, is again voted as the most trusted electronic media organization in the country. According to a survey by Reuters Institution in 46 countries, All India Radio and Doordarshan enjoy the highest trust.
  • The Digital News Report 2022 of the Reuters Institute said, print brands and public broadcasters, such as All India Radio and DD News continue to enjoy high trust among the survey respondents, while 24-hour television news channels are less well trusted along with newer digital-born brands.
  • The survey of the Indian News brands by the Reuters Institute shows the authenticity and accuracy of News by All India Radio and DD News stand at 72 percent and 71 percent.
  • According to the report, apart from the high level of trust in AIR News and DD News which continues to grow, even the reach of both All India Radio and DD News has increased.
  • The Reuters Institute said its Digital News Report 2022 measured the digital news consumption based on a YouGov survey of over 93 thousand online news consumers in 46 markets, covering half of the world’s population.

12th Meeting Of BRICS National Security Advisors

  • The 12th meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors, NSA was held virtually. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval emphasized the need for urgent reform of the multilateral system to address global issues with credibility, equity, and accountability.
  • He stressed the need to bolster cooperation against terrorism without any reservations. Mr Doval welcomed the cooperation ongoing in the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group. He also pressed on the need to continue cooperation against the challenges of pandemics and climate change.
  • NSA Doval also emphasized the importance of cooperation in the areas of Information and Communication Technology, ICT security, preventing its use by terrorists, outer space and maritime security. He also stressed the importance of trusted and resilient supply chains.

Operationalization Of Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax Ferry Services

  • Government has issued draft guidelines for operationalization of Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax ferry services along the coast of India for Stakeholder Consultation. The guidelines encompass the two aspects of ferry operation namely – concessions for terminal operation and license for operation of Ro-Pax vessels.
  • These guidelines will homogenize and streamline the development and operations of ferry services, along with, promoting ease of doing business by eliminating unnecessary delays. The suggestions can be sent to sagar.mala@gov.in within 21 days from the date of publication.
  • Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, under its Sagarmala Programme, has embarked on developing an ecosystem for the promotion of Ro-Ro ferry and waterway transportation in the country.
  • This mode of transportation has multiple benefits including reduced travel time, reduced logistics cost and lower pollution in comparison to conventional mode of transportation.
  • In view of immense potential and distinct advantages of ferry service, the Ministry is financially supporting 45 projects with total project cost of one thousand nine hundred crore rupees.

Proposed AI Enabled Common Single Pension Portal

  • Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has informed that the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare will soon launch Artificial Intelligence,( AI) enabled Common Single Pension Portal for the benefit of pensioners and elder citizens. He said the portal will also help in seamless processing, tracking and disbursal of pensions.
  • Interacting with beneficiaries of Bhavishya – Portal for Pension Payment and Tracking System – in New Delhi today, Dr. Singh said, this AI-supported portal will send automatic alerts to pensioners and superannuated elder citizens to bring complete “Ease of Living” for central government pensioners. He said, the portal will not only enable constant contact with pensioners but will also regularly receive their grievances for the prompt response.

  • Indian para-powerlifters Manpreet Kaur and Parmjeet Kumar have won bronze medals on the opening day of the World Para-powerlifting 2022 Asia Oceania Open Championships at Pyeongtaek in South Korea.
  • In Women’s Category Manpreet Kaur won the bronze medal in the 41 kg category.  In the men’s category, Parmjeet Kumar also won the bronze medal in the 49 kg category.
