Tamil Nadu Day

  • it was on 18th July 1967 that a resolution was adopted by the then Madras Presidency and it came to be called Tamil Nadu. The resolution was moved by the then Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai.
  • It was on the 1st of November 1956 that Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala were separated from the Madras Presidency. But it was in 1967 on 18th of July that the remaining Madras Presidency was called Tamil Nadu. The previous AIADMK Government celebrated the day on 1st of November.

Polling For 16th Presidential Election Ended

  • Polling, which began in the Parliament House and the premises of the State Legislative Assemblies at 10 A.M., continued till 5 P.M. The term of office of President Ram Nath Kovind is ending on the 24th of July.
  • Former Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu is the NDA candidate, while former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha is contesting as a joint Opposition candidate for the top post.
  • The total number of electors is 4,809 including 776 Members of Parliament and 4033 Members of Legislative Assemblies.
  • The counting of the votes will be taken up on Thursday.
  • Registering a voter turnout of 99.12%, according to the Election Commission (EC).
  • Among the two candidates in the fray, the NDA’s Droupadi Murmu was supported by 44 political parties and has a clear edge over the Opposition’s Yashwant Sinha, who is supported by 34 political parties officially.

All-Party Meeting To Discuss Sri Lanka Crisis

  • The Centre has called an all-party meeting to discuss the Sri Lanka crisis.
  • Parliamentary Affairs minister Pralhad Joshi said that the meeting will be chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • During an all-party meeting convened by the government yesterday, DMK and AIADMK had demanded that India should intervene in the crisis surrounding the island nation.
  • External Affairs Ministry has earlier said that India will continue to stand with the people of Sri Lanka as they seek to realize their aspirations for prosperity and progress through democratic means and values as well as established institutions and a Constitutional framework.
  • MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that this year itself, India has expeditiously finalized and delivered assistance as well as support worth about 3.8 billion dollars to Sri Lanka.

Seminar “Swavlamban”

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the NIIO (Naval Innovation and Indigenization Organisation) Seminar ‘Swavlamban’ at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.
  • One of the key pillars of AatmaNirbhar Bharat is to attain self-reliance in the Defence Sector. To make this endeavor forward, the Prime Minister will unveil ‘SPRINT Challenges’, aimed at giving a boost to the usage of indigenous technology in the Indian Navy.
  • As a part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, NIIO, in conjunction with the Defence Innovation Organisation, aims at inducting at least 75 new indigenous technologies and products into the Navy. This collaborative project is named SPRINT, which stands for SPRINT stands for Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through iDEX, NIIO, and TDAC.

R Praggnanandhaa Wins Paracin Open Chess Title

  • In Chess, young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has won the Paracin Open ‘A’ chess tournament 2022 in Serbia.
  • The 16-year-old remained unbeaten and finished half a point ahead of the field. 
  • The teenage prodigy will be part of a strong India ‘B’ team in the 44th Chess Olympiad to be held near Chennai from July 28.

Nepal Extends Import Ban On Goods Till August End

  • In Nepal, the government has extended an 81-day-old import ban on 10 types of goods till the end of August, citing a lack of improvement in the country’s foreign currency reserves.
  • As per the notice published in Nepal Gazette yesterday, cell phones priced over 300 dollars and motorcycles with an engine capacity of over 150 ccs shall be barred entry till the 30th of August along with liquor, tobacco products, diamond, color TV sets larger than 32 inches, jeeps, cars and vans, dolls, playing cards, and snacks. The government notice said the ban is enforced to safeguard the external financial position and balance of payments in order to forestall any imminent threat to the economy.
  • According to media reports, the ban, first imposed in late April, should have run till mid-July, when the current fiscal year ended.
  • Nepal Rastra Bank in a statement said, as of the first 11 months of the 2021-22 fiscal year that ended on Saturday, Nepal’s forex reserves had decreased 19.6 percent to 9.45 billion dollars from 11.75 billion dollars in mid-July 2021.
  • However, the central bank data also show that there had been a slight improvement in the inflow of remittances, the largest source of forex earnings for Nepal, during the same period. Farmers across the country are facing shortages of chemical fertilizers and inflation is also rising to double digits.

Ghana Confirms First 2 Cases Of Deadly Marburg Virus

  • In Ghana, the government has confirmed its first two cases of the deadly Marburg virus. It is a highly infectious disease in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola.
  • In a statement, the government said, both patients died recently in hospital in the southern Ashanti region.
  • Their samples came back positive earlier this month and have now been verified by a laboratory in Senegal. Health officials in the West African nation said, 98 people are now under quarantine as suspected contact cases.
  • According to media reports, no treatment yet exists for Marburg. However, doctors said that drinking plenty of water and treating specific symptoms improve a patient’s chances of survival.
  • The virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads between humans through the transmission of bodily fluids.
  • It is a severe, often fatal illness with symptoms including headache, fever, muscle pains, vomiting blood, and bleeding. Officials are warning people to keep away from caves and to thoroughly cook all meat products before consuming them.
