Henley Passport Index 2022
- Japan, Singapore, and South Korea have the most powerful passports as the world continues to recover from Covid-19, reversing pre-pandemic rankings that were dominated by European nations.
- A Japanese passport provides hassle-free entry to 193 countries, one more than those from Singapore and South Korea, according to the latest Henley Passport Index from Henley & Partners, an immigration consultancy.
- Russian travel documents are ranked 50th, giving easy access to 119 nations. China placed 69th with access to 80 countries, India’s passport ranked 87th, and Afghanistan’s passport is the least useful, getting the holder into only 27 countries.
Iran To Be Admitted In SCO
- The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is set for its second expansion with Iran to be added as its newest member at the upcoming summit in the historic city of Samarkand in mid-September under the Uzbekistan Presidency.
- SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming said that he expects to see a Memorandum of Obligations of Iran joining the SCO to be passed at the summit.
- Belarus has also applied for SCO membership. The Secretary-General told the media in Beijing on Friday that legal process regarding Belarus’ application for SCO membership will soon start, but it will require the consensus of all member states. The decision to admit Iran was made in last year’s Dushanbe summit.
- SCO Foreign Ministers meeting on 28-29 July will set the agenda for the Samarkand Summit where SCO expansion is among the issues that leaders of the grouping are likely to discuss. This SCO summit is being held amid major geopolitical developments like war in Ukraine, the situation in Afghanistan, cross-border terrorism, extremism, supply chain logistics, and connectivity with Eurasia.
IMF Warns Against Russian Gas Embargo
- International Monetary Fund warned that a Russian gas embargo would lead to severe recessions in eastern Europe and Italy if countries around the world hoarded their own scarce supplies.
- The IMF predicted that unless liquid natural gas was shared and prices were artificially held down, any Russian action to stop supplying Europe would trigger economic contractions over the next year in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Italy.
- Agency reported that Russia’s Gazprom had told customers in Europe it could not guarantee gas supplies because of “extraordinary” circumstances, adding to fears that Moscow may not restart the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Thursday.
Ranil Wickremesinghe New President Of Sri Lanka
- In Sri Lanka, acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe elected a new President, the Speaker announced the result after the election was held in Parliament amid tight security. Troops were kept on high alert.
- In the 225-member Parliament, Ranil Wickremesinghe obtained 134 votes while Dullas Alahapperume obtained 82 votes and Anura Kumara Dissanayake obtained 3 votes. A total of 223 MPs including the Speaker voted while two MPS abstained from the voting.
- Mr. Wickremasinghe had been serving as acting President after Gotabaya Rajapakasa had to resign from the top post following widespread protests in the country.
- Rajapakasa first flew to the Maldives and then to Singapore after tens of thousands of protesters stormed his official residence in the capital Colombo. The worst economic crisis in Sri Lanka’s history has prompted an acute shortage of essential items like fuel.
Drought Resistant And Genome Edited Rice Strain
- A drought-resistant and Genome-Edited rice strain will be available for field evaluation by Kharif in 2024 and for general cultivation in 2026.
- Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
- He informed that the Indian Agriculture Research Institute has developed the drought-resistant and salinity-tolerant rice strain by genome-editing technology and a budget of 98.05 lakh rupees has been sanctioned for the same.
- He further informed that the Ministry of Environment and Department of Biotechnology have given the relevant sanctions for the filed evaluation during the Kharif 2024.

- India And Namibia Signed An Mou On Wildlife Conservation And Sustainable Biodiversity Utilization For Establishing The Cheetah Into The Historical Range In India.
- The MoU Was Signed Between Vice President Of Namibia Nangolo Mbumba And Environment, Forest And Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav In New Delhi.
- Mr Yadav Said, The MoU Seeks To Promote Conservation And Restoration Of Cheetah In Their Former Range From Which The Species Went Extinct.

- The Government Has Sanctioned 2,877 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations In 68 Cities Across 25 States And Union Territories Under Phase 2 Of The FAME India Scheme (Faster Adoption And Manufacturing Of Electric Vehicles).
- The Government Has Formulated FAME India Scheme In 2015 To Improve The Infrastructure Required For The Large-scale Use Of Electric Vehicles.
- 1576 Charging Stations Have Also Been Sanctioned Across Nine Expressways And 16 Highways Under FAME India Scheme.
- He Said, Under Phase-1 Of Fame India Scheme, 479 Charging Stations Have Been Installed As On 1st July This Year. The Minister Said, Under Phase-2 Of Fame-India Scheme One Thousand Crore Rupees Has Been Allocated For The Development Of Charging Infrastructure For A Period Of Five Years From 1st April 2019.
Over 1,63,000 Renounced Indian Citizenship In 2021
- Over one lakh 63 thousand persons have renounced Indian citizenship during 2021.
- This information was given by the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
- He said out of these 78 thousand 284 Indians have received the citizenship of the USA and 23 thousand 533 persons of Australia.
