Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Remembered His Death Anniversary

• Syama Prasad Mukherjee (6 July 1901 – 23 June 1953) was an Indian politician, barrister and academician, who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. After falling out with Nehru, protesting the Liaquat-Nehru Pact, Mukherjee resigned from Nehru’s cabinet. With the help of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951.
• He was also the president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from 1943 to 1946.
• He died in the custody of Jammu and Kashmir Police in 1953.
• He was provisionally diagnosed of a heart attack and shifted to a hospital but died a day later.
• Since the Bharatiya Janata Party is the successor to the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Mukherjee is also regarded as the founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Deadliest Earthquake Hits Afghanistan

• The Taliban in Afghanistan has appealed for international support, as the country deals with the aftermath of a devastating 6.1 magnitude earthquake. More than 1,000 people have died and at least 1,500 were injured.
• Paktika province in the southeast has been the most affected. The UN is scrambling to provide emergency shelter and food aid. The rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and hail.
• The deadliest earthquake to strike the country in two decades is a major challenge for the Taliban, which regained power last year.
• The earthquake struck about 44 km from the city of Khost yesterday and tremors were felt as far away as Pakistan and India.

47^th Meeting Of The GST Council Scheduled

• The 47th Meeting of the GST Council will be held on 28th and 29th of this month in Srinagar.
• GST Council’s last meeting which was held in New Delhi had recommended to defer the decision to change the rates on textiles.
• The GST Council had decided to retain the status quo on GST rate on textile at five per cent.

Kuwait’s Crown Prince Dissolves Parliament

• Kuwait’s crown prince dissolved Parliament yesterday and called for early elections. However, the date for legislative elections was not immediately announced.
• The country’s Cabinet resigned two months ago over disputes with Parliament, resulting in a prolonged paralysis.
• Over a dozen Kuwaiti lawmakers began a sit-in last week inside the Parliamentary Chamber to press for a new government and voice their opposition to the worsening political crisis that has blocked economic and social progress in the country.

India Stood 3^rd @ FIH Pro League

• In Hockey, Indian Women’s team defeated United States 4-nil in the second match of the FIH Pro League at Rotterdam in Netherlands.
• The victory follows brilliant performance by the Indian side which beat United States 4-2 in the first match.
• India is at the third spot in the standings with 30 points behind leaders Argentina and the Netherlands.

India Shines @ Under-17 Asian Championship

• Indian women’s wrestling team has won five medals to claim the Under-17 Asian Championship title with a total of eight gold at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
• India lifted the title with a total of 235 points from eight golds, one silver, and one bronze. Japan had to be content with the runners-up trophy with 143 points and Mongolia finished third with 138 points.
