IREDA launches ‘Whistle Blower’ portal

  • Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA), a PSU under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) today launched a ‘Whistle-blower Portal’, as a part of ‘Vigilance Awareness Week 2021’.
  • Through this portal, IREDA employees can raise concerns related to fraud, corruption, abuse of power etc.
  • The portal has been developed by IT Team of the company. Launching the portal, Shri Pradip Kumar Das, CMD, IREDA highlighted that Whistle-blower portal is a part of a IREDA’s “zero tolerance” of corruption. Reiterating the Good and Clean Governance policy of the company, Shri Das stressed the importance of transparency and procedural fairness.

Sixth International One Health Day

  • The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India will celebrate International One Health Day on November 3, 2021 by organizing a Stakeholder Forum on the theme ‘Industry and One Health’ as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • November 3,2021 will mark the sixth International One Health Day highlighting the need for a One Health approach to address interrelated health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. The day seeks to highlight interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary engagements as well as multisectoral collaboration as aspects crucial to the implementation of the One Health concept.
  • The convergence of the microbial, human, animal, and wildlife worlds in nature provides everyday essentials for the survival of human beings. This interaction may also lead to painful and tragic consequences from pathogens. The impact of zoonotic diseases has been felt throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is therefore important to discuss, debate, and pinpoint areas that require intervention, such as policy framework, regulation, financial, human, social, natural, and physical capitals, global learnings and best practices, and other relevant issues.
  • Global health faces growing threat from emerging zoonoses which have led to massive economic damage over the past two decades. The Forum would bring together policy makers, industry, public health professionals, civil society members and all relevant stakeholders and provide a dynamic platform to understand the roles and responsibilities of the industry towards implementing the One Health approach. This will witness discussions around the impact on health if we ignore the One Health approach and help devise a collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach to fight future pandemics and maintain the One Health approach for a sustainable future.

National Ayurveda Day 2021

  • India celebrates Ayurveda Day every year on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. This day has been marked every year since 2016 on Dhanwantari Jayanti.

  • The National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur commemorated 6th National Ayurveda Day by hosting a two-day event to encourage the Ayurvedic principles of wellness and healing in alignment with the theme, ‘Ayurveda for Poshan’. The event started with Dhanwantari Pooja. India is striving to become the global centre for traditional medicine and there is increasing collaboration between states and central government to make advancements in field of AYUSH.

Ministry of Rural Development signs MoU with Flipkart

  • Flipkart, India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Rural Development of the Government of India (MoRD), for their ambitious Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) program, to help empower local businesses and self-help groups (SHGs) – especially those that are led by women – by bringing them into the e-commerce fold.
  • The partnership is aligned with the DAY-NRLM’s goal of strengthening the capabilities of rural communities for self-employment and entrepreneurship, thus providing further impetus to the Prime Minister’s vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

India to Reach Carbon Neutrality by 2070

  • India announced that it will reach carbon neutrality by 2070 as part of a five-point action plan that included reducing emissions to 50% by 2030.
  • India made this pledge at the Conference of the Parties (COP) 26 climate summit in Glasgow, where it also urged developed countries to deliver on their promise of climate financing.
  • However, India hasn’t submitted an updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) with these commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) yet.
  • Net Zero is a state in which a country’s total emissions are offset by absorptions of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, like that done by trees and forests, and physical removal of carbon dioxide through futuristic technologies.

18th India-ASEAN Summit

  • India participated in the 18th India-ASEAN Summit at the invitation of Brunei, the current Chair of ASEAN.
  • The Year 2022 has been highlighted as India-ASEAN Friendship by the leaders. India-ASEAN Summit is held every year and provides an opportunity for India and Asean to engage at the highest level.
  • The centrality of ASEAN in India’s Act East Policy and in India’s Vision for the wider Indo-Pacific Vision has been underlined.
  • Welcomed the adoption of the India-ASEAN Joint Statement on cooperation for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, building upon the synergies between the ASEAN Outlook for the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).

COP26 Climate Summit’s First Major Deal

  • More than 100 world leaders have promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030, in the COP26 climate summit’s first major deal.
  • Brazil, where stretches of the Amazon rainforest have been cut down, was among the signatories on Tuesday. The pledge includes almost $19.2bn of public and private funds.
  • Experts welcomed the move but warned a previous deal in 2014 had failed to slow deforestation at all and commitments needed to be delivered on. Felling trees contributes to climate change because it depletes forests that absorb vast amounts of the warming gas CO2.
  • England Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is hosting the global meeting in Glasgow, said, more leaders than ever before, a total of 110, had made the landmark commitment.

Infrastructure for Resilient Island States

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) on sidelines of climate summit in Glasgow this afternoon. It is aimed at achieving sustainable development through a systematic approach to resilient, sustainable and inclusive infrastructure in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
  • Speaking on the occasion, Mr Modi said, the launch of IRIS gives a new hope, confidence, and satisfaction of doing something for the most vulnerable countries. He said, the last few decades have proved that no one is untouched by the wrath of climate change and the small island developing states face biggest threat from climate change.
  • The Prime Minister added that Indian Space Research Organisation will build a special data window for Small Island Developing States to provide them timely information about cyclones, coral-reef monitoring and coast-line monitoring.
