Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Passes Away

  • Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot while giving a campaign speech in western Japan. The former Prime Minister was shot in the back and bleeding on-site when he was shifted to a hospital.
  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the shooting of his predecessor Shinzo Abe is unforgivable. He condemned the shooting as a barbaric and malicious act and said, that it cannot be tolerated. Mr Kishida was speaking to reporters at his official residence in Tokyo after rushing back to the capital from Yamagata, where he had been campaigning.
  • Japanese Official media reports that two shots were heard. NHK reports that Police have arrested a man, named Yamagami Tetsuya for attempted murder. It was also reported that a gun seized at the scene appeared to be handmade. The 41-year-old suspect lives in Nara city where the shooting took place.

10th World Peace Forum

  • India’s Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat said that BRICS countries, can make a greater contribution to the world, but not necessarily in conflict with international groups, adding that India participates in all the different international events as India can make greater contribution by actively cooperating with more countries.
  • Speaking at a panel discussion “BRICS Cooperation: Opportunities and Challenges” as part of the 10th World Peace Forum in Beijing organized by Tsinghua University, Rawat tried to dispel the notion that BRICS is trying to replace other institutions and organizations.
  • “There are also comparisons between BRICS and other international organizations.
  • It seems that some people are saying that BRICS is trying to replace other institutions and organizations, but I don’t think that’s the case. Our aim is to provide more positive ideas and more initiatives for global development,” he said.

SVANidhi Mahotsav

  • Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched ‘SVANidhi Mahotsav which is a cultural festival for celebrating the success of the PM SVANidhi Scheme.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is organizing ‘SVANidhi Mahotsav’ from 9th  to 31st of this month. It is being held in 75 cities across 33 States and Union Territories.
  • The Mahotsav will showcase a series of activities like Cultural activities, Digital transaction training, Loan Mela, a Felicitation ceremony for distinguished street vendors, and Experience Sharing Nukkad Natak the features and benefits of the Scheme.
  • Prime Minister Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi – PM SVANidhi scheme was launched on the 1st of June 2020 to facilitate working capital loans to street vendors to help them restart their businesses which were adversely impacted due to the lockdown imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mission Vatsalya Scheme

  • Women and Child Development Ministry has issued guidelines for Mission Vatsalya Scheme. Earlier, it was known as Child Protection Services (CPS) Scheme, since 2009-10 for the welfare and rehabilitation of children.
  • The objective of Mission Vatsalya is to secure a healthy and happy childhood for each and every child in the country.
  • It also has objective to ensure opportunities to enable them to discover their full potential and assist them in flourishing in all respects, in a sustained manner, foster a sensitive, supportive, and synchronized ecosystem for development of children, assist States and UTs in delivering the mandate of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and achieve the SDG goals.
  • Mission Vatsalya promotes family-based non-institutional care of children in difficult circumstances based on the principle of institutionalization of children as a measure of last resort.
  • Components under Mission Vatsalya include, improve functioning of statutory bodies; strengthen service delivery structures; Upscale institutional care and services; encourage non-institutional community-based care; emergency outreach services; training and capacity building.
  • All the States and UTs have signed the Memorandum of Undertaking (MoU) with the Ministry for implementation of the Scheme.
  • Mission Vatsalya will be implemented as a centrally sponsored scheme as per prescribed cost sharing ratio between the Centre and States.

UNESCO Panel On Intangible Cultural Heritage

  • India has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for the 2022-2026 cycle, the government said on Thursday.
  • India has served as a member of the ICH Committee twice – from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018.
  • Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy, in a tweet, said, “As the nation celebrates Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, India will be a part of two prominent Committees of UNESCO – Intangible Cultural Heritage (2022-2026) and World Heritage (2021-2025). This is yet another opportunity for India to reinstate the values of ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam’.”
  • According to UNESCO, the core functions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage are to promote the objectives of the convention, provide guidance on best practices and make recommendations on measures for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage.

Amitabh Kant To Be New Sherpa Of G-20

  • Former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant will be the new Sherpa of G-20. Commerce minister Piyush Goel will give up the position as Sherpa of G-20. 
  • With the G-20 presidency coming to India, a full-time Sherpa is required who would be needed to devote a lot of time to meetings that will be held in different parts of the country.

Colombo Security Conclave

  • The 6th Deputy National Security Adviser level meeting of the members of Colombo Security Conclave was held in Kochi.
  • The member states are India, Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. Delegations from Bangladesh and Seychelles participated as Observers.
  • The participants discussed the implementation of the Roadmap for Cooperation for 2022-23 and the decisions taken at the 5th NSA level meeting of the Conclave held in March this year in Maldives.
  • Maritime safety and security, countering terrorism and radicalization, combating trafficking and transnational organised crime, cyber security, protection of critical infrastructure and technology and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief were discussed at the meeting.

Akasa Air Airlines Gets Air Operator Certificate

  • The country’s newest airline Akasa Air has received the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation to start its commercial operations.
  • The airline in a tweet said that this is a significant milestone, enabling it to open its flights for sale and leading to the start of commercial operations.
  • The grant of the AOC is the final step of a comprehensive and rigorous process laid down by the DGCA and marks the satisfactory completion of all regulatory and compliance requirements for the airline’s operational readiness.
  • The airline will commence commercial operations later this month.
  • Akasa Air, a brand of SNV Aviation Private Limited, is an Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is backed by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. The airline plans to start flights in July 2022, after getting its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
