World Brain Tumor Day

  • World Brain Tumor Day is observed every year on June 8 as a day dedicated to creating awareness about brain tumours. A brain tumour occurs in brain cells that multiply abnormally and in an uncontrolled way. They can be cancerous or non-cancerous depending on their location and grading. The grading is given based on the pace at which cells multiply and spread to the adjacent areas.
  • According to the International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC), over 28,000 cases of brain tumour are reported in India every year. Of these, 24,000 succumb to the deadly disease.
  • World Brain Tumor Day was first observed on June 8, 2000, by the German Brain Tumor Association (Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe e.V.), a non-profit organisation for serving and offering support to brain tumour patients. The day came into existence with the idea of paying tribute to brain tumour patients and their families by educating people about the disease.
  • The theme for World Brain Tumor Day 2022 is “Together We Are Stronger.”

World Summit Of Information Society 2022

  • The World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2022 represents the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development community.
  • The Forum provides structured opportunities to network, learn and participate in multi-stakeholder discussions and consultations on WSIS implementation.
  • Recently, the Minister of State for Communications, Shri Devusinh Chauhan attended the opening ceremony of the World Summit of Information Society (WSIS) 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland, where India showcased its telecom prowess during multilateral & bilateral engagements.
  • The participation comes with India contesting the re-election to the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Council, for the term 2023-2026. India has been a member of ITU, since 1869 and has been continuously participating, actively in the works, and activities of the Union.

Biotech Startup Expo-2022

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi today and address the gathering.
  • The Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 is a two-day event to be held on 9th and 10th of this month.
  • It is being organised by the Department of Biotechnology and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council BIRAC.
  • It is being held to mark completion of ten years of setting up of BIRAC.
  • The theme of the Expo is ‘Biotech Startup Innovations: Towards AatmaNirbhar Bharat’.
  • The Expo will act as a platform to connect entrepreneurs, investors, industry leaders, scientists, researchers, bio-incubators, manufacturers, regulators, government officials, etc.
  • About 300 stalls will be set up at the Expo, which will showcase the applications of biotechnology in various fields such as healthcare, genomics, biopharma, agriculture, industrial biotechnology, waste-to-value, clean energy, among others.

Drug Destruction Day

  • A Total Of Around 42,000 KG Of Narcotics Were Destroyed At 14 Locations Across The Country On 8th June.

  • The Central Board Of Indirect Taxes And Customs Will Conduct A Drug Destruction Day As Apart From Iconic Week Of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Celebrations Of the Ministry Of Finance To Mark The 75th Year Of Indian Independence.

Sri Lanka Economic Crisis Deepens

  • Sri Lankan prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today said that the country needs at least 5 billion dollar over the next six months to pay for essential goods. Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe told Srilankan Parliament, the money is needed for basic items such as food, fuel and fertiliser.
  • Mr Wickremesinghe, who is also the country’s finance minister, told parliament that more money was required this year to meet Sri Lanka’s basic needs.
  • The Prime Minister added that, the United Nations also plans to make a worldwide appeal for Sri Lanka, and has pledged 48 million dollar for food, agriculture and healthcare.
  • He also warned of a slowdown in government payments to businesses and workers across the country, as funds are redirected to pay for food supplies.
  • In May, Sri Lanka defaulted on its debts with international lenders for the first time in its history as it faces its worst economic crisis in more than 70 years. The country has held bailout talks with the International Monetary Fund.
  • The country’s economy has been hit hard by the pandemic, rising energy prices, and populist tax cuts. A shortage of medicines, fuel and other essentials has also caused to push the cost of living to record highs.

Avani Lekhara Strikes Gold At Para Shooting World Cup

  • Indian shooter Avani Lekhara won gold medal at the Para Shooting World Cup in France yesterday with a record score. The victory assured Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Lekhara of a spot in the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • Avani created a world record by scoring 250.6 in the women’s 10-meter air rifle standing SH1 event.
  • PM Modi congratulates Avni Lekhara for winning gold at Para Shooting World Cup; also wishes shooter Sriharsha Devaraddi for winning Gold.

US Open Badminton Tournament Cancelled

  • Badminton World Federation today confirmed that the US Open scheduled for 4th to 9th October has been cancelled.
  • USA Badminton concluded that it is no longer feasible for them to host their tournament this year due to organizational complications coming out of COVID-19.  The US Open is a Super 300 tournament on the BWF World Tour.
  • This is the third consecutive time that US Open has been cancelled.

World Bank Slashes Global Economic Growth Forecast

  • World Bank slashed the global economic growth forecast for 2022 due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, supply chain disruption and other factors. It added that many countries are likely to face recession.
  • In its Global Economic Prospects report, the bank said, the world economy is expected to experience its sharpest deceleration following an initial recovery from global recession in more than 80 years.
  • It has been predicted that the world economy will expand 2.9% this year. It will be down from last year’s 5.7% global growth and from the 4.1% it had forecast for this year back in January.
  • World Bank’s president David Malpass said, the war in Ukraine, lockdowns in China, supply-chain disruptions, and the risk of stagflation are hampering growth. For many countries, recession will be hard to avoid, he added.
  • However, the World Bank chief warned against trying to resolve the inflation spike with price controls or export restrictions. Mr. David Malpass said it is urgent to encourage production and avoid trade restrictions.

RBI Revises Repo Rate, Inflation & GDP Growth Rate

  • The Reserve Bank Of India Increased The Repo Rate By 50 Basis Points To 4.90%. The Current Repo Rate Is 4.40% After The Rates Were Increased By 40 Basis Points At An Off-cycle Meeting Of The Monetary Policy Committee. The Central Bank Forecasts 6.7% Inflation, While The Real GDP Growth Rate Is Pegged At 7.2%.
  • The RBI Also Revised The Inflation Projection For FY23 To 6.7 Percent From 5.7 Percent Earlier.
  • Stating On Inflation Das Said, Inflation Likely To Remain Above 6 Percent In First Three-quarters Of Current Fiscal.
  • Our Steps Will Be Calibrated, Focussed On Bringing Down Inflation To Target Level,” The Governor Said. The RBI Also Left Its FY23 GDP Growth Forecast Unchanged At 7.2%.
