BEML, STX Engine Tie Up For Defence And Marine Solutions
- Defence PSU BEML Limited on Tuesday said it has signed a strategic partnership with South Korea-based firm STX Engine to co-develop, manufacture and market Battle Tank engines, marine engines, spares, and engine aggregates.
- The agreement also includes servicing and maintenance of engine components to cater to Indian defence needs while exploring export opportunities to friendly nations, the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) said.
- A MoU was exchanged between Shantanu Roy, CMD, BEML Limited, and Sangsu Lee, President & CEO, STX Engine, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations at Aero India 2025.
- BEML has a rich legacy of innovation and technological leadership across defence mobility solutions, missile systems, metro and rail components, mining equipment and modernisation programs.
Maoist-hit Districts Down to 38 from 126 in 6 years
- Over 4,000 km of roads have been constructed in Left Wing Extremist (LWE) affected areas and more than 1,300 telecom towers commissioned to improve connectivity, Minister of State (MoS), Home, Nityanand Rai stated in a written reply before the Lok Sabha.
- Under the ‘National Policy and Action Plan 2015‘, there has been a progressive decline in the number of districts affected by LWE. In the past six years, the number of LWE-affected districts has reduced from 126 to 90 in April 2018, and further to 70 in July 2021 and then to 38 in April 2024.
- On the violence perpetrated by LWE, Rai noted that the same has been reduced by 81% in 2024 to 374 in comparison to 1,936 in 2010.
- Similarly, casualties involving civilians and security forces have reduced by 85% during the same period from 1,005 in 2010 to 150 in 2024.
- Laying out a five-year progress report after 2019-20, Rai said under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme, Rs 1,925.83 crore has been released to all LWE-affected states during the past five years from 2019-20 till date.
Captain Among 2 Soldiers Killed in ‘IED’ blast
- Two army personnel were killed and another injured in a suspected improvised explosive device blast in Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, said officials. Those killed were identified as Captain KS Bakshi and Naik Mukesh, they said.
- This was the third incident of cross-border action by terrorists in the Jammu region in four days.
- On Monday, a soldier was hit by a bullet from across the border while manning a forward post in the Kalal area of the Nowshera sector in Rajouri district, while on February 8, an Army patrol came under terrorist fire from a forest across the LoC in Rajouri’s Keri sector.
UAE Proposes Sudan Ceasefire; Army Rejects The Call
- The United Arab Emirates called on Tuesday for a ceasefire in Sudan during the coming holy month of Ramadan, a UAE official said, a call rejected by the Sudanese army, as the country’s civil war approaches the two-year mark.
- The army considers the UAE to be an aggressor of the war, accusing it of arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, accusations UN experts and US lawmakers have said are credible. The UAE denies these charges. The war in Sudan has created the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophe, with more than 12 million people displaced, half the population hungry, and increasing fragmentation of the impoverished country.
- The RSF is currently engaged in an assault on the city of al-Fashir, the army’s last remaining stronghold in the Darfur region, as it loses ground to the army in the capital Khartoum.
Thales, Bharat Dynamics to provide first Supply of MANPADS
- Thales and Bharat Dynamics Limited announced on Tuesday at Aero India 2025 here that they will soon provide the first supply of Laser Beam Riding MANPAD (LBRM) Very Short-Range Air Defence missiles and launchers to the Ministry of Defence.
- Earlier in 2021, a partnership agreement was signed between Thales and BDL to collaborate on the LBRM project with the support of the Indian and UK governments, stated a press release issued by Thales on Tuesday.
- According to the press note, LBRM, manufactured with up to 60 percent indigenous content in India, are short-range, man-portable air defence systems optimised to counter air threats, including fixed-wing Fighter Ground Attack aircraft, late-unmasking Attack Helicopters, and drones.
