In a stunning development, a former National Security Guard (NSG) commando has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a large-scale interstate drug smuggling operation. Bajrang Singh, who previously played a pivotal role in combating terrorism during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, was taken into custody late Wednesday night in Ratangarh, Churu, by a coordinated team of the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF).
The operation, dubbed ‘Operation Gaanjaney,’ culminated in the seizure of nearly 200 kg of cannabis, also known as ‘ganja.’ Singh, who was on the run and had a bounty of ₹25,000 on his head, was reportedly trafficking narcotics from Telangana and Odisha into Rajasthan.
Authorities had been on a two-month manhunt, tracking Singh’s movements through a distinctive pattern: he was almost always accompanied by a trusted cook from Odisha. This led investigators to delve into the cook’s family connections, which ultimately helped pinpoint Singh’s location and facilitate his arrest.
Inspector General of Police Vikas Kumar stated that Singh’s apprehension would likely disrupt a significant drug trade network that had been operating across state lines, underscoring the critical nature of this operation.
The narrative of Bajrang Singh’s life is a dramatic fall from grace. After joining the NSG at a young age, he became part of an elite counter-terrorism unit, contributing to national security efforts. His involvement in the harrowing events of the 2008 Mumbai attacks marked him as a national hero. However, following his retirement in 2021, Singh’s trajectory took a troubling turn. An unsuccessful bid to enter politics led him down the path of illicit activities, where he quickly became entrenched in narcotics trafficking.
Investigators believe Singh’s arrest will significantly impact the drug trafficking routes that have been fueling the narcotics market in the region. What was once a story of valor and dedication has transformed into a cautionary tale of how a decorated serviceman transitioned to a life of crime, raising concerns about the vulnerabilities facing individuals after leaving service.
