Boeing Pitches sale of 60 Apache Gunships to India

American aviation giant Boeing is now eyeing mega gunship contracts from the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army. Boeing reportedly has offered to supply 60 Apache attack helicopters to India that it feels will be required to be equipped with the Army Aviation and IAF for three-strike brigades.
IAF has inducted 22 Apache attack choppers, the Army has gone in for an additional six, the fuselage of which will be built in India by Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited. Boeing officials have informed Indian MoD officials that there is no competition between Apache and the LCH (light combat helicopter) as they complement each other.
Boeing officials have said that Apache can further enable and be a multiplier effect for the LCH as in the future, both could be networked together to hunt in packs while LCH was developed especially to be used on glaciers and very high altitudes while Apache can’t operate in these areas.

Army Signs Contract For 565k Medals With Private Firm To Ensure Supply

The Indian Army has concluded a contract for more than 560,000 medals with a private firm to ensure soldiers do not have to buy such medals, which signify their achievements, from the market.
The bulk order for medals comes on the back of a similar order placed in October 2020 to procure 1.7 million medals. “The army has placed an additional order for 565,000 medals of different types to ensure soldiers don’t have to make the purchase from the market. The 1.7 million medals ordered earlier have been delivered.
Soldiers are entitled to a variety of medals after completing a certain number of years in service, serving in difficult areas or taking part in various operations. For instance, after nine years of service, a soldier is entitled to a medal. Again, after 20 years of service, he is entitled to another medal. After 30 years, he is entitled to a third service medal. The shortage of medals was forcing soldiers to buy medals from the open market.

Defence Ministry To Develop Centralised Payment System

The Defence Accounts Department of the Defence Ministry is developing a centralised system for the Armed Forces and other defence institutions who have different legacy systems for their pay, allowances, pensions and gratuities, said Rajnish Kumar, the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA).
- “The three premier entities we cater to — the Army, Navy and the Air Force and other entities including Border Roads, DRDO and Coast Guard — have different legacy IT systems for matters related to payments of any kind.
- We have worked on all aspects of the new system, including cyber security. We expect to complete the system by the end of the current financial year. By incorporating various AI tools, we will have a foolproof, safe and effective centralised system. A dedicated system for making payments of third party sellers will start functioning this month-end”.

India To Ink ‘Repeat Order’ Deal For 73,000 Sig 716 Rifles from The US

The defence ministry is in the final stages of approving a repeat order for 73,000 SiG 716 G2 patrol assault or battlefield rifles from the US to meet the requirements of its frontline troops.
Sources in the defence and security establishment told that notwithstanding reports of alleged cancellation of the proposed order of SiG 716, the ‘repeat order’ procurement of 73,000 rifles by defence ministry “is at the final stage of approval”.
In February 2019, 72,400 SiG 716 rifles — 66,400 for the army, 4,000 for the air force and 2,000 for the Navy — of 7.62 x 51mm caliber were contracted from SIG Sauer Inc, USA, under the government ‘Buy (Global) category’ through the fast track procedure.
Defence sources said that considering the performance of the weapon, and to ensure operational necessity, commonality and associated logistics functionality, the defence ministry is now in the process of approving a repeat order of 73,000 SiG-716 assault rifles.
The reason for the selection of this particular weapon is because of a revision in the Indian Army’s operational philosophy in 2016, wherein the 7.62 x 51mm calibre was chosen over the 5.56 x 45mm calibre, as having the optimum calibre for operations.
The SiG-716 Assault Rifle, being of higher calibre (7.62 x 51mm) has longer effective range, more lethality and higher recoil, as compared to the INSAS Rifle (5.56 x 51mm Calibre) or the AK-47 Rifle (7.62 x 39mm), which are also used.

Gurutvaa Systems delivers ‘Dronaam’ C-UAS to Indian Air Force

Indian firm Gurutvaa Systems has delivered the first set of the indigenously developed ‘Dronaam’ counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UASs) to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Harshad Dave, director of Gurutvaa Systems, told Janes that an undisclosed number of Dronaam C-UASs were delivered to the IAF earlier in May under a contract signed in August 2021. The system was delivered within nine months.
Dave said the system underwent design review in October 2021 and the first prototype trials were conducted in December 2021. The second trial of a production standard system, which incorporated suggestions from the first trial, was conducted by IAF in February 2022.
Dave further added that the Dronaam system is developed completely indigenously and has proved effective at disrupting the GNSS (global navigation satellite system) navigation and jamming radio frequencies of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Passing Out Division of 98 Officer Trainees from First Training Squadron

98 Officer Trainees of the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy passed out from the ships of 1 TS on 18 Mar 2022. Rear Admiral Antony George, Chief of Staff, SNC awarded trophies to the meritorious Officer Trainees during the Passing Out Divisions.
The coveted CNS Trophy and Telescope for the best All Round Sea Trainee was awarded to Midshipman Hari prasad LM. The Chief of the Naval Staff Trophy and Binoculars for standing First in Overall Order of Merit was awarded to Midshipman Aditya Gupta. Midshipman N Chandan Sriram was awarded the FOCINC East Rolling Trophy for most promising Sea Trainee and Midshipman Royal Kuhad was awarded the FOC-in-C South Rolling Trophy for sports. Assistant Commandant KB Chandramouli was awarded the Director General Coast Guard Rolling Trophy for the Best Assistant Commandant. The trainees will now depart for INA for their commissioning ceremony which is scheduled for 28 May 2022.
