Partition Horrors Remembrance Day
- Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is a national memorial day in India on 14 August that commemorates the victims and sufferings of people during the Partition of India.
- The day remembers the sufferings of many Indians during the partition. Several families were displaced, and many lost their lives in the partition.
- It aims to remind Indians of the need to remove social divisions, and disharmony and to further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony, and human empowerment.
- The partition had left 10 to 20 million people displaced and left 2 hundred thousand to 2 million dead.
- On 14 August 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the 14 of August annually will be remembered as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to remind the nation of the sufferings and sacrifices of Indians during the partition in 1947.
Sri Aurobindo Remembered On His Jayanti
- Sri Aurobindo (15 August 1872 – 5 December 1950) was an Indian philosopher, yoga guru, maharishi, poet, and Indian nationalist.
- He was also a journalist, editing newspapers such as Vande Mataram.
- He joined the Indian movement for independence from British colonial rule, until 1910 was one of its influential leaders, and then became a spiritual reformer, introducing his visions on human progress and spiritual evolution.
- His main literary works are The Life Divine, which deals with the philosophical aspect of Integral Yoga; Synthesis of Yoga, which deals with the principles and methods of Integral Yoga; and Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol, an epic poem.

- The Veteran Trader-cum-investor, Also Known As The Big Bull Of Dalal Street, Was Reported To Have A Net Worth Of Around $5.5 Billion, According To Forbes.

Lisbon Triennale Lifetime Achievement Award
- Renowned Bangladeshi architect, researcher, and educator Marina Tabassum became the first person from the global south and the first south Asian to win the prestigious Lisbon Triennale Millennium BCP Lifetime Achievement Award.
- The International Jury for the award said that Marina Tabassum’s unique practice touches on the spiritual fundamentals of architecture.
- Driven by specific cultural and geographical context, her works address pressing contemporary issues, said the jury in their citation for the award.
- Her work shows how architects can challenge the climate crisis and bring about social change in an experimental, respectful, and inspiring manner.
- She will receive an original artwork by the Portuguese artist and sculptor Carlos Nogueira as an award during the Lisbon Triennale which begins on 29 September in Lisbon, Portugal.
India Adds 11 More Wetlands As Ramsar Sites
- India has added 11 more wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites to make total 75 Ramsar sites covering an area of 13 lakh 26 thousand 677 Hectare in the country in the 75th year of Independence.
- Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change said, the 11 new sites include, four in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Designation of these sites would help in conservation and management of wetlands and wise use of their resources.
- India is one of the Contracting Parties to Ramsar Convention, signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. India signed it on 1st February 1982.
- During 1982 to 2013, a total of 26 sites were added to the list of Ramsar sites, however, during 2014 to 2022, the country has added 49 new wetlands to the list of Ramsar sites.
- During this year itself, a total of 28 sites have been declared as Ramsar sites. Based on the date of designation mentioned on Ramsar Certificate, the number is 19 for 2022 and 14 for 2021.
- Tamil Nadu has a maximum number of Ramsar sites which is 14, followed by Uttar Pradesh which has 10 numbers of Ramsar sites.
Chenab Rail Bridge In J&K Gets Golden Joint
- In Jammu and Kashmir, the world’s highest rail bridge over the Chenab river in the Kouri area of Reasi district achieved another milestone yesterday when the overarch deck of the bridge was completed with a golden joint.
- The golden joint shall now pave the way for engineers to lay tracks on the bridge. With tracks over it, Kashmir will be linked with the rest of India via rail network for the first time since Independence.
- Afcons is building 16 additional railway bridges for Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) in the dangerous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir in addition to the Chenab Bridge.
- All the bridges are part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
India Unveils First Saline Water Lantern
- Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh today unveiled India’s first Saline Water Lantern which uses the seawater to power the specially designed LED lamps.
- The Minister visited the SAGAR ANVESHIKA, a Coastal Research Vessel, operated and used by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai to review the progress of the implementation of the Deep Ocean Mission of India.
- The saline Water Lantern will bring “Ease of Living” to the fishing community living along the 7500 Kilometres long coastal line of India.
- Saline water-powered Roshini LED lamps will also boost and supplement Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UJALA scheme.
Salman Rushdie Attacked
- Renowned author Salman Rushdie has been taken off the ventilator. Rushdie’s agent, Andrew Wylie, confirmed that Rushdie was taken off a ventilator and could be able to talk.
- He, however, may lose an eye after he was stabbed by 24-year-old Hadi Matar. Rushdie was stabbed in the neck at a literary event in western New York on Friday. Rushdie was put on a ventilator after hours of surgery and the nerves in his arms were severed.
- The attack on Rushdie comes more than 30 years after Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death over his book ‘The Satanic Verses. The book has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous.
- The attacker, Hadi Matar, is facing charges of attempted murder and assault. A preliminary review of Matar’s social media accounts by law enforcement showed him to be sympathetic to Shia extremism and the causes of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. New York State Police are working with the FBI and local authorities to determine the motive.
