VAJRA PRAHAR 2022 Culminated At Bakloh
- The 13th Edition of India – USA Joint Special Forces Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR 2022 culminated at Bakloh (HP) on 28 August 2022. This annual exercise is hosted alternatively between India and the United States. The 12th edition was conducted at Joint Base Lewis Mc Chord, Washington (USA) in October 2021.
- The 21-day joint training provided an opportunity for the Special Forces from both nations to train in Air Borne Operations, Special Operations and Counter Terrorism operations in a joint environment under United Nations Charter. The exercise was conducted in two phases; the first phase involved combat conditioning and tactical level special missions training exercises and the second phase included 48 hours of validation of training received by both contingents in the first phase.
- Both contingents expressed immense satisfaction on the outcomes of the exercise, in terms of the standards achieved and sharing of best practices, when both contingents undertook joint training, planning and execution of a series of mock operations in simulated conventional and unconventional scenarios in mountainous terrain.
- Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR with the US Special Forces is significant in terms of security challenges faced by both Nations in the backdrop of the current global situation. The joint military exercise has further strengthened the traditional bond of friendship between the special forces of both Nations as well as improved bilateral defence cooperation between India and the USA.
Rajnath Singh Approves 3rd Positive Indigenisation List
- In continuous pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing and to minimise imports by DPSUs under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has approved the third Positive Indigenisation List of 780 strategically important Line Replacement Units /Sub-systems/Components with a timeline beyond which they will only be procured from the domestic industry.
- These lists contain 2,500 items that are already indigenised and 458 (351+107) items which will be indigenised within the given timelines. Out of 458, 167 items (1st PIL -163, 2nd PIL – 4) have been indigenised, so far.
- Indigenisation of these items will be taken up through different routes under ‘Make’ category. ‘Make’ Category aims to achieve self-reliance by involving greater participation of the Indian industry. Projects involving design and development of equipment, systems, major platforms or upgrades thereof by the industry can be taken up under this category.
- The indigenous development of these LRUs/Sub-systems/components will bolster the economy and reduce the import dependence of DPSUs. In addition, it will help to harness the design capabilities of domestic defence industry and position India as a design leader in these technologies.
INS SUMEDHA Visits Port Klang
- As part of the Indian Navy’s long-range operational deployment, INS Sumedha deployed to South East Asia, visited Port Klang, Malaysia on 27 August 2022. The ship is on her return passage from Perth, Australia where she participated in the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
- INS Sumedha’s visit to Port Klang is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability between Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). Both navies have been collaborating on various fronts and are playing a critical role in ensuring Maritime Security and Safety of global commons.
- The bilateral engagements between both navies are on an upswing with the participation of KD Lekiu in MILAN 2022 at Visakhapatnam followed by the conduct of the IN-RMN bilateral maritime exercise Samudra Lakshmana at Kota Kinabalu in May 2022.
- During the port call at Port Klang, the crew of INS Sumedha would engage in professional interactions, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE), cross deck visits and sports fixtures with personnel from the Royal Malaysian Navy. The ship will also be open for the visit of school children.
- INS Sumedha is also scheduled to participate in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with RMN Ships.
- INS Sumedha is an indigenously built Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel deployed for multiple roles independently and in support of Fleet Operations. She is part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam and functions under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
India, Brazil Reaffirm Urgent Need For UNSC
- India and Brazil have reaffirmed the urgent need for a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to help combat contemporary challenges to international peace and security.
- This consensus was reflected in a joint statement released after the 8th Brazil-India Joint Commission Meeting (JCM). The joint commission, which was held in Brasilia on August 24.
- The two countries also cooperate extensively in multilateral organisations, including the United Nations, and plurilateral fora such as G20, BRICS, IBSA, BASIC and G4.
- “The total bilateral trade increased by 63.5 per cent to USD 11.53 billion in 2021 from the previous year, and India became Brazil’s 5th largest trading partner.
Russia Demands Changes To NPT Document Concerning Zaporizhzhia Plant
- Russia demanded amendments to the paragraphs of the final document of the 10th Review Conference of the Treaty on the NPT, which concerned the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, president of the conference Gustavo Zlauvinen said
- Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control Igor Vishnevetsky previously said that Russia proposed modifying five paragraphs of the document, bringing them in line with the urgent agenda related to the NPT review process and clearing them of political connotations.
- The ZNPP, located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and output. Since March, the plant has been under the control of the Russian military. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, it is currently being managed by a Ukrainian operator.
10th National Maritime Search & Rescue Exercise (SAREX-2022)
- India Coast Guard conducted 10th National Maritime Search & Rescue Exercise (SAREX-2022) at Chennai. 24 observers from 16 foreign countries attended the Exercise.
- Exercise “SAREX-2022” was reviewed by Indian Coast Guard chief VS Pathania along with other agencies and foreign participants.
- ICG Dornier planes demonstrated ways of rescuing passengers from ships and aircraft during emergencies.
- The theme of this edition of the biennial exercise is “Capacity Building Towards Marine Passenger Safety” and signifies the resolve and commitment of the NMSARB and other stakeholder agencies in providing succor during large-scale contingencies within our ISSR and beyond.
