North Korea Fires 17 Missiles; One Lands Off South Korean Coast For First Time

  • North Korea fired at least 17 missiles into the sea on Wednesday, including one that landed less than 60 km off South Korea’s coast on Wednesday, prompting South Korea to issue rare air raid warnings and launch its own missiles in response.
  • It was the first time a ballistic missile had landed near the South’s waters, and the most missiles fired by the North in a single day. The missile landed outside of South Korea’s territorial waters, but south of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a disputed inter-Korean maritime border in what South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called an “effective act of territorial encroachment.”
  • South Korean warplanes fired three air-to-ground missiles into the sea north across the NLL in response, the South’s military said. An official said the weapons used included an AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER, which is a U.S.-made “stand-off” precision attack weapon that can fly for up to 270 km with a 360 kg warhead.

South Korea Fires 3 Test Missiles In Response To North Launches

  • Air raid sirens sounded on a South Korean island and residents there evacuated to underground shelters after the North fired about a dozen missiles in its direction Wednesday, at least one of them landing near the rivals’ tense sea border. South Korea quickly responded by performing its own missile tests.
  • The launches came hours after North Korea threatened to use nuclear weapons to get the US and South Korea to “pay the most horrible price in history” as it has intensified its fiery rhetoric targeting the ongoing South Korean-US military drills that it views as an invasion rehearsal.
  • In an emergency meeting with top security officials, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol ordered officials to take swift unspecified steps get North Korea to face consequences for its provocation. He said he would consider the North Korean missile’s landing near the border “a virtual violation of (our) territorial waters”.
  • The North’s barrage of missile tests came as South Korea is on an official mourning period in the wake of the Halloween party crush that killed more than 150 people in Seoul in the country’s largest disaster in years.
  • During the emergency South Korean meeting, “participants lamented the provocations committed during our national mourning period and pointed out that this clearly showed the nature of the North Korean government,” according to South Korea’s presidential office.
  • Earlier Wednesday, Japanese Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada told reporters that at least two ballistic missiles fired by North Korea showed possible on “irregular” trajectory. This suggests the missiles are the North’s highly maneuverable, nuclear-capable KN-23 missile, which was modeled on Russia’s Iskander missile.

Army Commanders’ Conference To Take Place Next Week

  • The entire top brass of the Indian Army will come together next week in the national capital to review the security situation along the borders. The top brass of the Army led by General Manoj Pande would be part of the Army Commanders’ Conference starting Monday where they would discuss all aspects related to security and operational preparedness, Army officials said.
  • The conference would be taking place for the first time after the completion of disengagement between the Indian and Chinese Army from four friction points created after the May 2020 aggression by the Chinese military.
  • The conference is also expected to look at newer ways to push Make in India in defence of developing more indigenous weapon systems for the troops. General Pande is a strong supporter of indigenisation and has asked officers dealing with modernisation to handhold the Indian private and public sector firms to develop world-class weapons.
  • The meeting is expected to be addressed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.
  • The meeting would also see interaction with other services which would help in enhancing jointness among the forces.
  • Steps towards the creation of theatre commands are also likely to come up for discussion at the meeting.

ISRO Is Ramping Up Its Efforts To Build Its Own Space Station By 2035

  • As India eyes setting up its own space station by 2035, the ISRO has proposed to the industry to collaborate with it in developing a reusable rocket capable of carrying heavier payloads into orbit.
  • Dubbed as the Next-Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), ISRO Chairman S Somanath said the space agency was working on the design of the rocket and would like the industry to collaborate with it in the development.
  • “The intent is to bring industry along in the development process. All the money need not be invested by us. We want the industry to invest to create this rocket for all of us,” Somanath told PTI here. He said the rocket is planned to carry a 10-tonne payload in the Geostationary Transfer Orbit or 20 tonnes to the low earth orbit.
  • The NGLV is envisioned as a simple, robust machine designed for bulk manufacturing that will make space transportation more cost effective.
  • Somanath said the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), ISRO’s warhorse rocket, was based on the technology developed in the 1980’s and cannot be used to launch rockets in the future.
  • ISRO plans to have the design of the NGLV ready within a year and offer it to the industry for production, with the first launch tentatively scheduled for 2030.
  • The NGLV could be a three-stage rocket powered by green fuel combinations such as methane and liquid oxygen or kerosene and liquid oxygen.
  • According to a presentation made by Somanath at a conference earlier this month, the NGLV could offer launch costs of USD 1900 per kg of payload in the reusable form and USD 3,000 per kg in the expendable format.
