  • Terrorism

Today, terrorism is associated with warlike activities that violate human and civil rights. The United States has been at the head of the anti-terrorist movement after 9/11 disaster. It has taken a burdensome mission to lead the global anti-terrorist movement, with the enemy invisible, hidden, and unpredictable. This mission gave birth to many mistakes and distorted the idea of a noble peace-making mission. Civilian populations in Iraque and Afghanistan got involved; no progress was made against terrorism as the evil of the 21st century. Notorious violations of civil and human rights in Iraque ended in many protests, especially in the Muslim world.

Terrorism is the plaque of the 21st century. Global mass media terrorize populations with the reports of shocking terrorist attacks. But the roots of terrorism remain untouched. Yet, terrorism may be viewed from the three perspectives. Terrorists defend their civil and human rights, they fight against injustice and discrimination. This is their story that must be heard. Victims suffer physically and psychologically from terrorist activities. They experience pressure, instability, danger, and unsafety. For them, terrorists are criminals that deliberately take away human lives. The public opinion depends on the attitude to either terrorists or victims. In the Muslim world terrorists may be treated as victims. In the rest of the world terrorists are considered to be criminals whose acts of severe violence must be punished.

  • Global Warming

The global warming is one of the problems which the whole world is aware about. It can be said that it is the product of the society’s development without giving much concern to the nature. Every now and then the countries are addressing this problem to try and find out a solution to this problem. The recent studies in this sphere have proved beyond the shadow of any doubt that the temperature of the atmosphere is increasing each year. The increase in the amount of carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere is considered as the most contributing reason for this global phenomenon. This has caused an increase of the temperature by about 1 degree Fahrenheit per year. If the things will continue going this way, it will result in the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The immediate outcome of this would be the rise in the sea levels. The countries which are having large coastal areas will be the first to suffer from it.

It is not just the responsibility of the various governments to take steps for preventing this. It is high-time to make strong decisions and unite in order to protect our land and the planet from dilapidation. Each one of us has the duty to do what we can, to prevent this imminent disaster. Some simple steps are enough to be taken in order to prevent this big problem. One of them is to plant more trees. This can decrease the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

  • IT in Our Daily Life: IT has an enormous influence on todays global economy. After the great Industrial Revolution of Europe, it is IT revolution that has swept the world. IT has significant applications in the fields of macro economic planning, public administration decision making, education, health care, energy conservation, environmental management etc.

Commerce and industry also are IT enabled processes and office automation systems to a great extent. Industrial applications of IT range from product designing / product processing and inventory management to distribution systems. IT applications in commerce include e-banking, credit cards, stock exchanges gaining global information, expert management, etc. IT has permeated almost every sphere of human endeavour. It is widely recognised that 21st century belongs to information technology and life science. India’s strength in IT is a leverage for entering in field of bio-technology.

  • Environmental pollution: Any undesirable physical, chemical or biological change caused to land, water, air and other natural resources is termed as environmental pollution. These pollutions make life very difficult. Though there are various causes for pollution, man himself is a major cause. Over-pollution is the chief cause. Air pollution is due to industrial and automobile exhaust. These contain carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. They cause breathing trouble and even cancer. Plants are unable to synthesis food. The protective ozone layer is affected thereby, exposing us to the ill effects of radioactive rays. Accumulation of rubbish, polythene and plastic containers, glass and porcelain, result in land pollution. They cause various diseases. The letting in of domestic sewage waste, industrial waste and tannery effluents, pollute drinking water. The use of excess of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides and DDT, pollute both land and water. They lead to many deadly, contagious diseases. Oil leaks in the oceans affect marine life. They endanger many marine species. Gas leakage, leakage of nuclear reactors also poses several threats to us. The latest is the leak of cyanide from a gold mining company in to the blue Danube. More than 80% of the marine species is dead. The river has turned grey. Unless suitable steps are taken to check pollution, mankind will be destroyed along with other organisms.
  • Rain Water Harvesting: Water is the elixir of life. Though 2/3 of the world is covered by sea water, the potable water is a little more than just 1% of water available on this globe. Even this 1% is not easily available to us. A part of it is found in the poles and the rest flows as river and gets lost into the ocean. The water that percolates down the porous soil and gets stored alone sustains most of the human race. As the world population has exploded the pressure on potable water is also high. So, there is a need to preserve Rain water to prevent wars between countries on water.

Man has ever been the most ungrateful wretch. He keeps on digging borewells and uses water to the maximum wihtout ever bothering to replenish the water tables. As a result, there is a seepage of sea water in borewells in cities located near the shore. Besides, agriculture is becoming economically un-viable because of elss availability of water for irrigation. So, Tamil Nadu State Government has promulgated an ordinance insisting on rain-harvesting in all the homes through out the state. A 4 feet square pit is dug. The bottom is filled with sand for half a feet height and for about a height of six to eight incches gravel is spread. Then again sand is filled in for half a feet height. Then the four walls of the pit are plastered with brick and mortar. A pipe is routed to the pit form the roof tip. The moment rain falls, it reaches the pit. As PRIs offered their technical expertise for building the rain-harvesting pit, many came forward to fulfil the Government order. Those who resisted were threatened with cutting of water supply etc. by Municipal authorities.
