‘Status Holder’ Certificates

  • During a meeting with the Export Promotion Councils, Shri Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Textiles, introduced a groundbreaking initiative to implement automated ‘Status Holder’ certificates as part of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023.
  • This transformative measure not only reduces compliance burdens and fosters a business-friendly environment but also highlights the significance of government collaboration.
  • A Revolutionary Transformation in Export Certification
  • Historically, Indian exporters were required to apply to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) office for a Status Certificate. This procedure involved submitting an online application along with an export certificate issued by a Chartered Accountant. The DGFT Regional Offices were then responsible for issuing the certificate within three days. However, the new initiative aims to streamline this process.
  • Under the revised approach, exporters will no longer be required to submit applications for Status Certificates. Instead, these certifications will be automatically granted each year in August, based on the annual export figures available from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), in conjunction with other risk assessment parameters. This shift towards automation marks a significant departure from the traditional manual application process.
