22nd Commonwealth Games Kicks Off
- The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games kicked off with a glitzy opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
- A total of 2,000 performers traced the story of Birmingham’s past and present. A Giant animatronic bull took center stage during the opening ceremony. A total of 72 teams took part in the parade into Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.
- PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh were India’s flag-bearers at the parade of the CWG opening ceremony.
- A total of 54 nations are participating in this sports extravaganza and 6,500 athletes will compete in 280 medal events.
- The event will be held till the 8th of August. A 215-member Indian contingent, which includes 111 male players and 104 female players, will compete in 15 sporting events in Birmingham.
PM Modi Inaugurates 44th Chess Olympiad
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 44th Chess Olympiad at Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
- The Olympiad torch which crossed the 75 iconic cities of the Country was brought to the Stadium by five-time world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand and was handed over to Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister MK Stalin and was later given to the chess prodigy Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
Sebastian Vettel Announces Retirement
- Four times world champion Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from Formula One at the end of the season.
- The 35-year-old said, his goals had changed, and he wanted to focus more on family and interests outside the sport.
- Sebastian will end his final season with Aston Martin after winning a total of 53 Grand Prix and 122 podium finishes. Vettel made his debut in 2007.
- His first title win came in 2010 which also made him the youngest title winner. He won four titles for Red Bull between 2010 to 2013.
- Vettel who is a legend of the sport is third on the list of all-time Grand Prix winners with 53 victories to his name. Only Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher have more titles than him.
India’s First International Bullion Exchange
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s first International Bullion Exchange (IIBE) at Gujarat International Finance Tech (GIFT) City in Gandhinagar.
- Prime Minister also launched NSE IFSC-SGX Connect and laid the foundation stone of the headquarters of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) at GIFT City.
- Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister said GIFT city has been established as an integrated finance and technology services hub for India and the world.
- Mr. Modi said India is now entering the league of countries like the USA UK and Singapore which are giving direction to global finance.
- He said with the inauguration of IIBE, India can not only influence the gold pricing but also play a role in setting the gold prices.
Spanish PM Asks To Stop Wearing Ties To Save Energy
- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called on workers in the public and private sectors to stop wearing ties, as an energy-saving measure in the heat. Mr. Sanchez said, his government will adopt urgent energy-saving measures on Monday as European countries strive to become less dependent on Russian gas in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
- On Friday, temperatures reached 36 degrees Celsius in Madrid and 39 degrees Celsius in Seville. Over the past few weeks, Europe has experienced record-high temperatures.
- At a news conference in Madrid, Prime Minister Sanchez said, not wearing ties will ensure people stay cooler and therefore lower energy costs because air conditioners will be used less often.
- Spain is not the first to take this move. In 2011, Japan introduced its “Super Cool Biz” campaign, which encouraged office workers to wear cooler clothes in summer.
- And during sweltering temperatures in the UK recently, politicians were told they could ditch their suit jackets while in the House of Commons
SCO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting In Tashkent
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has called for urgently addressing the energy and food crisis that the world is facing today, due to disruptions from the Covid pandemic and Ukraine conflict.
- Dr. Jaishankar was speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at Tashkent in Uzbekistan.
- The Minister said that the response required to address these challenges includes, resilient and diversified supply chains as well as reformed multilateralism. He stressed that zero tolerance for terrorism in all its manifestations is a must.
- Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s position on Afghanistan and highlighted the humanitarian support given by India including wheat, medicines, vaccines, and clothing. He also underlined the potential of Chabahar port for SCO’s economic future.
Agriculture Infrastructure Fund Awards
- Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar gave away Agriculture Infrastructure Fund Awards in New Delhi.
- The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund has launched 2 years ago, under the ambitious AatmaNirbhar Bharat Package, as a dedicated Central Government scheme that provides a medium-long term credit facility for investment in the creation of post-harvest management infrastructure and community farming assets.
- Out of more than 23,000 applications received on the integrated Portal of Agri Infra Fund, a total of 13,700 applicants have been sanctioned over 10,000 crore rupees. The sanctioned infrastructure projects cover warehouses, assaying units, primary processing units, custom hiring centers, sorting and grading units, cold store, and cold chain projects.
National Solar Rooftop Portal
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Power Ministry’s flagship Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
- The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme aims at improving the operational efficiencies and financial sustainability of the Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) and power departments.
- It is being implemented with an outlay of over 3 lakh crore rupees over a period of five years from Financial Year 2021-22 to 2025-26. The scheme envisages providing financial assistance to DISCOMs for modernization and strengthening of distribution infrastructure, focusing on the improvement of the reliability and quality of supply to end consumers.
- Mr. Narendra Modi unveiled the scheme during a program marking the culmination of ‘Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya – Power @2047’ through video conferencing.
- National solar rooftop portal, which will enable online tracking of the process of installation of rooftop solar plants, starting from registering the applications to release of subsidies in residential consumers’ bank accounts after installation and inspection of the plant.
Udham Singh Remembered On His Death Anniversary
- Udham Singh (26 December 1899 – 31 July 1940) was an Indian revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party and HSRA, best known for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940.
- The assassination was done in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for which O’Dwyer was responsible.
- Singh was subsequently tried and convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940.
- While in custody, he used the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, which represents the three major religions in India and his anti-colonial sentiment.

- Mirabai Chanu claimed India’s first gold medal in Birmingham’s Women’s 49-kilogram event.
- weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won a second Silver medal for India in the prestigious games in the Women’s 55 Kg category.
- Weightlifter Sanket Sargar clinched a silver medal in the Men’s 55-kilogram category while Gururaja Poojary bagged a bronze medal in the Men’s 61-kilogram finals.
