World Biofuel Day
- World Biofuel Day is celebrated on August 10 in memory of Sir Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine.
- On August 9, 1893, Sir Rudolf Diesel for the first time operated a mechanical engine with peanut oil. His experiment could foresee the use of vegetable oil as a practical source of energy in the coming century.
- World Biofuel Day is celebrated to commemorate this experiment.
- Biofuels not only help in ensuring a cleaner environment but also generate additional income and employment in rural areas.
- Realizing its importance, the Union government and private organizations undertake programs to raise awareness about the significance of non-fossil fuels.
- One such initiative conducted by the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India in association with the health ministry in 2019 was called ‘Repurpose of Used Cooking Oil’. The initiative collected used oil from hotels and restaurants and sent it to the biodiesel plants for blending.
International Youth Day
- International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12th.
- It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide.
- During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world.
- IYD was designated by the United Nations in 1999 & the first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000.
World Elephant Day
- World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s elephants.
- Conceived in 2011 by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark of Canazwest Pictures, and Sivaporn Dardarananda, Secretary-General of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation in Thailand, it was officially founded, and supported and launched by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation on August 12, 2012.
- Since that time, Patricia Sims continues to lead, support, and direct World Elephant Day, which is now recognized and celebrated by over 100 wildlife organizations and many individuals in countries across the globe.
Shaheed Khudiram Bose Remembered
- Khudiram Bose (3 December 1889 – 11 August 1908) was an Indian revolutionary from the Bengal Presidency who opposed British rule of India.
- For his role in the Muzaffarpur Conspiracy Case, along with Prafulla Chaki, he was sentenced to death and subsequently executed, making him one of the youngest martyrs of the Indian Independence Movement.
- Khudiram, along with Prafulla Chaki, attempted to assassinate a British judge, Magistrate Douglas Kingsford, by throwing bombs on the carriage they suspected the man was in.
- Magistrate Kingsford, however, was seated in a different carriage, and the throwing of bombs resulted in the deaths of two British women.
- Prafulla fatally shot himself before the arrest. Khudiram was arrested and trialed for the murder of the two women, ultimately being sentenced to death. He was one of the first Indian revolutionaries in Bengal to be executed by the British.
World Tribal Day
- The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9 August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.
- This event also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
- It was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994, marking the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
Justice Uday Umesh Lalit Appointed As 49th CJI
- President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice as the 49th Chief Justice of India, CJI. He will take over the charge on the 27th of this month. The present CJI Justice N V Ramana will retire on 26th August.
- Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India in August 2014. He will become the second Chief Justice of India to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar, after Justice S.M. Sikri, who served as the 13th CJI in 1971.
- Justice Lalit has served as a Member of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee for two terms. Born on 9th November 1957 in Solapur, Maharashtra, Justice Lalit was enrolled as an Advocate by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in June 1983.
- He practiced in the High Court of Bombay till December 1985 before shifting his practice to Delhi in January 1986.
Additional Protocol Of Universal Postal Union (UPU)
- Union Cabinet has approved ratification of the eleventh Additional protocol to the Constitution of the Universal Postal Union.
- The approval enables the Department of Posts to have the Instrument of Ratification signed by the President of India and have the same deposited with the Director General of the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).
- This will fulfill the obligations arising from Articles 25 and 30 of the UPU Constitution which provides for ratification of the amendments to the Constitution adopted by a Congress as soon as possible by the member countries.
- The amendments to the Constitution of UPU adopted by the 27th UPU Congress ensure further legal clarity and stability to the Acts of the Union.
Commission For World Peace
- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has proposed a 3-men commission comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Pope Francis for global peace.
- The Mexican President is planning to submit a written proposal to the UN to create the commission, made up of three world leaders, including PM Modi, to promote a world truce for a period of five years.
- The Mexican President said, the aim of the commission is to present a proposal to stop the wars around the world and reach an agreement to seek a truce for at least five years.
- He said, the move will help governments around the world dedicate themselves to support their people, especially the people who are suffering the most from the war and its effects.
- Calling for an end to warlike actions, the Mexican President has invited China, Russia, and the US to seek peace and hoped the three countries will listen and accept intermediation such as the one he is proposing.
Jagdeep Dhankar Sworn In 14th Vice President Of India
- Mr. Jagdeep Dhankar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Mr. Dhankar at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and many Union ministers were present at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Dhankhar paid tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat this morning. He placed a wreath at Gandhiji’s memorial and bowed before the Samadhi with folded hands.
- Mr. Dhankhar was elected as the Vice President on August the 6th. He secured 74.36 percent, the highest ever votes received in the last six vice presidential elections held since 1997. He defeated the opposition’s Margaret Alva to emerge as a winner.
