World Humanitarian Day
- World Humanitarian Day is an international day dedicated to recognizing humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as part of a Swedish-sponsored Resolution.
- on the Strengthening of the Coordination of Emergency Assistance of the United Nations and set as 19 August.
- It marks the day on which the then Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and 21 of his colleagues were killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.
4th India-Philippines Strategic Dialogue
- The 4th India-Philippines Strategic Dialogue was held in Manila today in which the two sides discussed Defence and Security Cooperation.
- They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest as well as ASEAN-related matters.
- They reviewed the multi-faceted relations between India and Philippines. The two sides also expressed their desire to advance bilateral relations and expand engagement in areas including agriculture, trade, pharmaceuticals, fintech, education, defence and security, and people to people ties.
HAL To Set Up Office In Kuala Lumpur
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed an MoU for establishing an office in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The office in Malaysia will help HAL in tapping the new business opportunities for Fighter Lead in Trainer (FLIT) LCA and other requirements of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) like Su-30 MKM and Hawk upgrades.
- It will reinforce the commitment of India in supporting the Malaysian Defence Forces and industry for sustainable aerospace and defence landscape in Malaysia.
- HAL’s office in Kuala Lumpur will take up market promotion of HAL’s range of products and services not only in Malaysia but in entire Southeast Asia.
- HAL had submitted a proposal to Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Malaysia during October 2021 for supply of 18 FLIT LCAs against a global tender issued by RMAF.
Government To Stop Import Of Thermal Coal
- Minister for Coal and Mines Pralhad Joshi has said that Government will stop the import of thermal Coal from next year.
- Inaugurating a workshop on Coking Coal Strategy for Indian Steel Sector in New Delhi, he said, the Ministry of Coal is targeting production of 900 million tonnes this financial year and the target of Coal India Limited comes to 700 million tonnes. Mr Joshi said, by 2030, India’s coal requirement will be of 1.5 billion tonnes.
- Indian economy is growing at a very fast pace and there has been a record coal-based power generation.
- Domestic coal production has gone up by 22 percent. He said, coking coal production marked 15 percent growth. Mr Joshi said, with Mission Coking Coal, production will improve and move towards AatmaNirbhar Bharat in Coking Coal arena.
Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar
- Government has said that five hundred cities across India have declared themselves as ‘Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar’.
- These cities were able to achieve adequacy in terms of institutional capacity, manpower and equipment norms as stipulated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and are providing safe working conditions for SafaiMitra.
- The Ministry said Urban India has recommitted itself towards ensuring the safety, dignity, and security of all sanitation workers or Safai Mitras.
- The ‘Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar’ declaration done by 500 cities aligns with Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban’s longstanding goal of promoting sustainable sanitation practices and acting as a catalyst for the transformation of every ‘manhole’ into a ‘machine hole’.
National Security Strategies Conference 2022
- Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a two day National Security Strategies (NSS) Conference 2022 in New Delhi yesterday. The Conference is being attended by 600 officers from across the country, physically and virtually.
- Home Ministry has said that on the first day of the Conference, deliberations were held on various aspects of national security, including counterterrorism, radicalization, issues pertaining to crypto currencies, counter rogue drone technology and challenges posed by Maoist outfits.
- During the conference, Mr Shah stressed on the importance of human intelligence towards countering terrorism, underscoring the crucial role of District Level Police officers in identifying emerging terror hotspots. The Home Minister also inaugurated the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System.
- This system will help in quick and easy disposal of cases with the help of centralized fingerprint database.
Project Cheetah
- The government has undertaken the ambitious Project Cheetah which aims to re-establish the species in its historical range in India.
- The reintroduction of wild species particularly the Cheetah is being undertaken as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN guidelines.
- Environment Ministry said processes like disease screening, quarantine of release candidates as well as transportation of live wild animals across continents require careful planning and execution.
- It said reports in certain sections of the media that African Cheetahs are still stuck in transit are completely unfounded.
- The date for Cheetah introduction and translocation has not been decided yet. Environment Ministry said all precautions are being taken to ensure the success of the project.
- Upon arrival, the Cheetahs will be kept under quarantine and observed before release. While the agreement has been signed with Namibia, the process of signing of MoU with South Africa is underway.
Zimbabwe: Measles Outbreak
- In Zimbabwe, a measles outbreak has killed more than 150 children. The government said the death toll reached nearly double in just a week. Zimbabwe’s Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the total number of suspected cases nationwide has jumped from 1,036 to 2,056 in just four days.
- Ms. Mutsvangwa said the government would step up vaccination and has invoked special legislation allowing it to draw money from the national disaster fund to deal with the emergency.
- She said, the government would engage with traditional and faith leaders to garner their support for the vaccination campaign, adding most victims were not vaccinated.
