World Wide Web Day

  • World Wide Web Day is observed on August 1 each year. The day is marked in honor of the ability of people to browse information freely using the Web. The Web is the tool that billions across the globe use every moment to interact with the global system of interconnected computer systems that is the Internet.
  • The WWW was created by English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, while he was working for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. Berners-Lee developed the essentials of the web –  HTTP, HTML, the WorldWideWeb browser, a server, and the first website – while working at the organization.

World Breastfeeding Week

  • World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is an annual celebration that is held every year from 1 to 7 August in more than 120 countries.
  • Organized by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF, WBW produced the goal to promote exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life which yields many health benefits, providing critical nutrients, protection from deadly diseases such as pneumonia and fostering growth and development for the first time in 1991.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak Remembered On His Death Anniversary

  • Bal Gangadhar Tilak (23 July 1856 – 1 August 1920) was an Indian nationalist, teacher, and independence activist.
  • He was one-third of the Lal Bal Pal triumvirate.
  • Tilak was the first leader of the Indian independence movement. The British colonial authorities called him “The father of the Indian unrest”.
  • He was also conferred with the title of “Lokmanya”, which means “accepted by the people as their leader”.
  • Mahatma Gandhi called him “The Maker of Modern India”.
  • Tilak was one of the first and strongest advocates of Swaraj (‘self-rule’) and a strong radical in Indian consciousness. He is known for his quote in Marathi: “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it!”.

Over Rs 36 Lakh Crore Worth Of Loan To MSMEs

  • Over 36 lakh crore rupees worth of loan amounts have been disbursed to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) during the last three fiscal years.
  • This was stated by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Minister Narayan Rane in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. He said, 13.62 lakh crore rupees worth of loan amount has been disbursed to MSMEs in the last fiscal year.
  • He added that over 11 lakh crore rupees have been disbursed through loans in the fiscal year 2020-21 and 11.40 crore rupees in 2019-20.
  • The Minister said the government has taken various measures to boost easy, cheap, and accessible loan facilities to MSMEs. He said the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme was announced as part of the AatmaNirbhar Bharat Package in May 2020 to support MSMEs given the distress caused by the COVID-19 crisis. The scheme is valid till March next year.

Achinta Sheuli Clinch Gold Medal In CWG

  • Indian weightlifting contingent’s dream run at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham continued as India’s 73 Kg representative Achinta Sheuli bagged the gold medal in his event.
  • The 20-year-old claimed the yellow metal with a combined effort of 313 Kilograms (143kg in snatch and 170kg in clean & jerk).
  • India has been performing exceptionally well in weightlifting as the contingent has already bagged 6 medals in this edition of the friendly games.
  • Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinunnga claimed a gold medal apiece while Bindyarani Devi and Sanketh Sargar picked up silver medals.
  • The only bronze to date under India’s tally in Birmingham came from Gururaja Poojary.
  • With Sheuli’s victory, India now has 3 gold, 2 silver, and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Maldives President Ibrahim Arrives In New Delhi

  • He Is On A 4 Day Visit To India. The Maldives is India’s key neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region and occupies a special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy.
  • India was among the first to recognize the Maldives after its independence in 1965 and to establish diplomatic relations with the country.
  • In recent years, the partnership has witnessed rapid growth in all areas of cooperation.
  • President Solih’s visit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to review the progress made in this wide-ranging partnership and lend further momentum to it.

New Zealand Reopens Its Borders Since March 2020

  • In New Zealand, the borders are fully open for the first time since March 2020, when they shut in an effort to keep out COVID-19.
  • According to media reports, immigration authorities will now begin accepting visitors with visas and those on student visas again.
  • However, most visitors will still need to be fully vaccinated, but there are no quarantine requirements. The country’s maritime border has also reopened, with cruise ships and foreign recreational yachts now allowed to dock.
  • New Zealand first announced a phased reopening plan in February. It allowed vaccinated citizens to return from Australia that month and those coming from elsewhere to return in March. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called it a good moment for the country.

Chinese Rocket Falls To Earth

  • A Chinese rocket fell back to Earth on Saturday over the Indian Ocean, but the NASA said Beijing had not shared the “specific trajectory information” needed to know where possible debris might fall.
  • US Space Command said the Long March 5B rocket re-entered the Indian Ocean on Saturday.
  • NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that all spacefaring nations should follow established best practices and do their part to share this type of information in advance to allow reliable predictions of potential debris impact risk.
  • He said doing so is critical to the responsible use of space and to ensuring the safety of people on Earth.
  • Aerospace Corp, a government-funded nonprofit research center near Los Angeles, said it was reckless to allow the rocket’s entire main-core stage – which weighs 22.5 tons to return to Earth in uncontrolled reentry.
