Government Sets Target Of Achieving Defence Manufacturing Worth Rs 1.75 Lakh Crore By 2024-25
- The government on Monday said it has set a target of achieving defence manufacturing worth Rs 1,75,000 crore, including defence exports of Rs 35,000 crore by 2024-25.
- Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt, replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, said the value of production undertaken by private companies and state-run defence manufacturers in 2021-22 was Rs 86,078 crore while the amount was Rs 88,631 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 63,722 crore in 2019-20.
- The value of production was Rs 50,499 crore in 2018-19 and Rs 54,951 crore in 2017-18.
- “The government has set the target of achieving defence manufacturing worth Rs 1,75,000 crore including defence exports of Rs 35,000 crore by the year 2024-25,” Bhatt said.
- “Further, the DRDO has undertaken 50 mission mode and technology development projects worth Rs 23,722 crore in the last three years for the development of indigenous weapons and technologies,” he said.

EXERCISE LA PEROUSE – 2023
- The 3rd edition of the multilateral exercise La Perouse is scheduled to be conducted in the Indian Ocean Region from 13 to 14 March 2023. This edition will witness the participation of personnel, ships and integral helicopters of the Royal Australian Navy, French Navy, Indian Navy, Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force, Royal Navy and the United States Navy.
- The biennial exercise La Perouse is conducted by the French Navy and is aimed at enhancing maritime domain awareness and optimising maritime coordination amongst the participating navies in the Indo-Pacific Region.
- Indigenously built guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri and fleet tanker INS Jyoti will be participating in this edition of the exercise. Participation of the Indian Navy in the exercise showcases the high levels of synergy, coordination and inter-operability between the friendly navies, and their commitment to a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region.
Biden Announces Nuclear-powered Submarines For Australia
- President Joe Biden and the leaders of Australia and the United Kingdom on Monday announced that Australia will purchase nuclear-powered attack submarines from the US to modernize its fleet amid growing concern about China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.
- Biden flew to San Diego to appear with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as they hailed an 18-month-old nuclear partnership given the acronym AUKUS – for Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- The partnership, announced in 2021, enables Australia to access nuclear-powered submarines, which are stealthier and more capable than conventionally powered vessels, as a counterweight to China’s military buildup.
- Rishi Sunak called AUKUS “the most significant multilateral defence partnership in generations.” He said the U.K. also will share its 60 years of experience running its own submarine fleet with Australian engineers “so they can build their own fleet.”
India’s Defence Exports Cross Rs 13,000 Crore
- Indian defence exports have breached the ‘13,000 crore mark, with a new record to be achieved this financial year given increased demand in Europe and efforts by the government to engage partners like Armenia that are looking for reliable suppliers.
- According to global arms sales tracker SIPRI, India still remains the world’s largest importer of arms but purchases from foreign vendors has declined by 11% between 2013-17 and 2018-22.

- To foster innovation and technology development in Defence by engaging Industries including MSMEs, start-ups, Individual Innovators, R&D institutes and Academia, iDEX (innovation for defence excellence) was launched. iDEX provides grants/funding and other support to carry out innovations/R&D. So far, 287 problems have been opened, 345 start-ups have been engaged, and 208 contracts have been signed.
23 Out Of 55 Defence Research Body Projects Missed Deadlines: Centre
- Twenty-three of the 55 high-priority projects being implemented by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) could not meet the deadlines, the government informed Parliament on Monday.
- The high-priority projects included developing anti-air field weapons, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range radars, combat vehicles, combat suits for submarines and submarine periscopes. Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt provided the details in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
- “Currently, there are 55 numbers of ongoing MM (Mission Mode) projects such as anti-air field weapons, solid fuel ducted ramjet technology, the surface to air missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range radars, combat vehicles, high endurance autonomous underwater vehicles, combat suits for submarines, submarine periscopes etc.,” he said.
