Raksha Mantri Addresses Army Commanders’ Conference 

  • The first Army Commanders’ Conference of the year 2023, commenced in a hybrid format on 17 April 2023. During the event, Indian Army’s apex leadership is comprehensively deliberating upon all aspects of existing security scenarios, situations along the borders and in the hinterland and challenges for the present security apparatus.
  • The Hon’ble Raksha Mantri released the second edition of the Indian Army UN Journal titled ‘Blue Helmet Odessey- Changing Contours of Peacekeeping Operations in the 20th Century” which is a compilation of inputs from missions and perspectives by senior military leaders and diplomats and a commemorative postal stamp on the occasion of 75 years of Indian Army.

8th India-Thailand Defence Dialogue 

  • At the invitation of the Government of Thailand, Special Secretary, Ministry of Defence Smt Nivedita Shukla Verma will pay an official visit to Bangkok between April 20-21, 2023.
  • During the visit, the Special Secretary will co-chair the 8th meeting of the India-Thailand Defence Dialogue with Deputy Permanent Secretary for Defence of the Ministry of Defence, Thailand General Nuchit Sribunsong on April 20, 2023.
  • India & Thailand share a strategic partnership and defence is a key pillar of this cooperation.
  • The bilateral defence engagements have expanded over a period of time to include wide-ranging contacts b/w the two countries including Defence Dialogue meetings, military-to-military exchanges, high-level visits, capacity-building and training programmes and bilateral exercises.

Rajnath Singh Speaks To Canadian Defence Minister, Discusses Bilateral Defence Relations 

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a telephone conversation with Canadian Minister of National Defence Anita Anand on Wednesday.
  • Both ministers discussed ways to develop bilateral defence relations, which shall be reflective of their democratic ethos and a shared interest in the peace and security of the Indo-Pacific.
  • Bilateral trade between India and Canada stands at USD 6.4 billion in 2020. In 2021, India was Canada’s 14th-largest export market, and 13th-largest trading partner overall.
  • India and Canada collaborate closely in international fora, particularly through the UN, Commonwealth and G-20.
  • Canada is the second largest country in the world in area (after Russia), occupying roughly the northern two-fifths of the continent of North America.

Patriot Air Defence Systems Arrive In Ukraine 

  • Ukraine received Patriot air defence systems, Kyiv’s Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov informed, saying the Ukrainian skies have now become more “secure.”
  • The latest assistance included the Patriot Air Defence System, capable of bringing down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at a significantly higher ceiling.

Air Marshal Sandeep Singh appointed Military Advisor to National Security Council     

  • Former Air Force vice chief and ace fighter pilot, Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, has been appointed the new Military Advisor to National Security Council.
  • The officer is expected to take over his new appointment on April 24.
  • He succeeds General Anil Chauhan, who was appointed as the Chief of Defence Staff in October, last year.
  • The NSC of India is an executive government agency tasked with advising the Prime Minister’s Office on matters of national security and strategic interest. It was established by the former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 19 November 1998, with Brajesh Mishra as the first National Security Advisor.
  • Besides the NSA, CDS, the Deputy NSA, the Ministers of Defence, External Affairs, Home, and Finance of the Government of India, and the Vice Chairman of the NITI Aayog are members of the National Security Council.

Indian Army, Tezpur University Sign MoU On Chinese Language Training For Army Personnel

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Army and Tezpur University for training the Indian Army personnel in the Chinese language.
  • Tezpur University established in 1994 by an act of parliament as a central university is one the pioneers in the North-East in the teaching of foreign languages including Chinese with highly qualified faculty.

‘Millet Awareness Programme’ Organized By Defence Research Laboratory in Tawang

  • Research & Development Centre Tawang of Defence Research Laboratory DRDO organised a “Millet Awareness Programme” under the International Year of Millets and Training on Improved Hill Farming Techniques in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang.
  • The main mandate of this training is to raise awareness about the modern aspects of improving millet productivity through scientific cultivation technology and the importance of millet in human diet and rural economy.
